🌈 Have you ever seen a Fire Rainbow?

Technically known as circumhorizontal arcs, they are a rarely seen optical phenomenon in the ice halo family formed by light refraction in clouds. They appear parallel to the horizon and are neither fire nor rainbows, but they are beautiful.

I have only seen them three times in my life.

This one was enjoyed while boating in the waterways around Charleston, SC, last weekend. 🚤

Have you ever seen one?

Today I am celebrating the 89th birthday of my childhood teacher, Rosemary Fleck. I was fortunate to go to a Montessori school, so she was my teacher for several years. All teachers want to make the world their classroom, but Mrs. Fleck truly did. After more than a year of study and preparation about Italy and the Renaissance, she took me and my fellow students, ages 7-10 to Italy for nearly two weeks.

On that trip, we stayed in pensiones- small, family-run places offering inexpensive food and lodging. We took public transportation. We ate local food. We visited art museums, attended concerts, studied architecture, carried our own bags, and walked miles every day.

When we returned home, we began our study of the Baroque period in Austria and Germany to prepare for our next trip, two years later.

Traveling in that way as a child affected my life in countless ways but especially in how I travel and how I prepare for travel. I don’t want to just see the famous landmarks and move on. I want to meet people, dine in small cafes, stray from the beaten path, avoid scheduling every minute, and immerse myself in local culture that I won’t find anywhere else.

I will always be grateful to Mrs. Fleck for giving me the world as well as the skills and desire to see and experience it properly.

I happened to be downtown yesterday and saw that the Norwegian Jewel was in port here in Charleston!

Seeing her there brought back happy memories of taking a “Grand Adventure” with my mom and my girls to Alaska on that very ship! The girls loved having Gamma with us and she treasured every moment with her granddaughters. Multi-generational travel is extremely special and is a fantastic way to have quality time together, nurture familial bonds, and create memories that last forever.

When people ask what my favorite cruise destination is, the answer is not what they expect. It is, without hesitation, Alaska. Period. There is simply no comparison. I am forever grateful to have been there and look forward to going again. My daughter loved her visit so much she accepted a job there for the summer. My daughter that HATES to be cold.

Even on sea days, the scenery is always changing. Wildlife sightings are frequent. Majestic views take your breath away. The Northern Passage is something that all Americans should experience.

In port, adventures await! Whalewatching, fishing, ziplining, sled dog experiences, National Parks & Forests, museums, kayaking, rafting, wildlife treks, rainforests, dining, hiking, helicopter rides, shopping, live shows, and just strolling through the villages and meeting the amazing people of our 50th state.

Now is the time to book for next summer; some ships, room categories, and excursions are already filling up. I can navigate you to the best cruise line and stateroom for your travel party, schedule, and budget. It is a fantastic way to beat the summer heat! The whales know- they summer in Alaska and winter in the tropics.

If you want to go this summer, during America's 250th celebration, there are a few spots left, but act fast! Link to Vacation Planning Form in the first comment.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Our diverse collection of National Parks are a perfect example of the power of conservation and the natural beauty of our incredible planet.

National Parks offer some of the most unforgettable travel experiences— sunrise hikes, scenic drives, and spectacular vistas. Some of our best family memories are made on trails, in canyons, and under wide open skies- and they don’t necessarily involve camping, either!

A National Park adventure offers kids (and adults!) a chance to unplug, explore, and fall in love with the world around them. What better time than our nation’s 250th birthday to explore the enduring gift these parks are to us?

What National Parks have you visited? Which ones are still on your bucket list?

People often talk about how you only have 18 summers with your children, and that is pretty much true. After high school they usually go to college or they may start working right away or join the military. That means that summers may not be their own anymore, even for the students, who often work or take on internships.

What people don’t talk about is Spring Break!

For many families, this is an annual travel time- a from a long semester, before the heat of the summer, when much of the world is in bloom. College Spring Breaks rarely fall at the same time as schools do. Young working adults don’t get as much PTO as their parents probably do. Plus, they often have other ways to spend it!

When my oldest was a senior in high school, it was the last Spring Break as a family- we went on a cruise with a brief visit to Walt Disney World. The following year she studied abroad and now she is a sophomore in college.

I was fortunate to take two Spring Breaks this year, one with each daughter! It was not the same as the entire family together, but at least I had that time with them. College daughter met me it Italy- she bought her own tickets!- and we had fantastic adventures in Milan and Parma cheering at a Paralympic Hockey game, witnessing the creation of Parmiggiano-Reggiano cheese, visiting grand museums, and enjoying wine tastings, plus an unexpected side quest to Switzerland. High school daughter and I went to Asheville, NC where we visited Biltmore Estate, fed baby goats on a farm, explored the River Arts District, and dined in spectacular restaurants featured in the new Michelin Guide to the America South. Both would have been better all together, but I will take what I can get!

How many Spring Breaks do you have left with your whole family? Now is the time to start planning next year’s travel. Availability most places is still good and remember: pricing goes up as availability goes down.

Clickbait headlines such as this one tend to cause my phone to blow up as panicking clients (plus my friends and family) reach out for answers. Sometimes they haven’t read the article, other times it is confusing to figure out. Lots of times, the headline gets picked up on other sources without supplying the vital information.

In this case, it sure sounds like the Monorail at Walt Disney World, or possibly Disneyland, is shutting down. Maybe forever? That is certainly what they want you to believe. They want you to click!

The truth?
Guests traveling from Central Paris to Disneyland Paris will be affected by the temporary closure of the train line between Vincennes and Noisy-le-Grand Mont d’Est stations. It isn’t Disney transportation and it isn’t even a Monorail.

Would you have ever guessed that?

Here is what you need to know:

If you are a client, I will always give you important updates that will affect your vacations. If it is something really big that was not announced before you booked, I will help you find a new resort, new dates, or another solution.

If necessary, they will panic for you.
