PSA on Illegal Charters! It seems everyone with a boat these days is using social media and boat rental apps to make a buck and cutting corners without the proper credentials. These “bareboat” charters will often attempt to get around the requirements by saying you are renting the boat and the captain is included. A state boating safety certificate is NOT a captain’s license. Make sure you request your captain’s credentials, issued by the US Coast Guard and Dept of Homeland Security, and a Certificate of Inspection if carrying over six passengers. Licensed captains must undergo a background check, random drug testing, several days of classroom instruction, and written tests, document over one year of sea time, pass a medical exam, be CPR certified and more. Stay safe out there! 🛥️
