Charleston might be nicknamed “the Holy City,” but there’s plenty of unholy history that lurks in its darker corners and under its pretty pastel façades 👻

Between Earth Day and Arbor Day, we’re celebrating some of our favorite living things in the low country: our big, beautiful, shade-giving trees! 🌳🌳🌳
Did you know that the Southern Live Oak, despite its name, is not a true evergreen? These majestic trees do actually drop their leaves each year, immediately before the new leaves emerge each spring.
Icons of the South, Quercus virginiana are known and loved for their sprawling crowns, which can support entire ecosystems. Keep an eye out for them as you explore downtown Charleston, relax in the shade of their canopy at White Point Gardens, or marvel at the massive oak trees at a nearby plantation, such as the eponymous specimen at Middleton Place.
Learn more about these and the other key trees of Charleston with naturalist Layton Register on our Walk on the Wild Side tour! Check the calendar at the link in bio to join a scheduled tour, or get in touch to book. We can’t wait to share Charleston with you!

It’s Wednesday, so we’re posting 💖pink💖
…and turquoise, and lavender, and green…because this week’s pink house feature is actually several houses - the iconic Rainbow Row! 🌈
Did you know that this is the longest stretch of extant Georgian row houses in the United States? They haven’t always been so colorful - at least not literally. When this was Charleston’s port, the neighborhood was full of sailors and associated unsavory characters, so no polite ladies of society were ever seen along this stretch of East Bay. It wasn’t until about a century ago that Susan Pringle Frost, the first female real estate agent in SC and the first president of , teamed up with preservation-minded friends to purchase, renovate, and re-sell these houses that had fallen into disrepair once the port moved. Her friend Dorothy painted her house Caribbean pink, and neighbors followed suit in bright pastel colors, creating the postcard-worthy homes we see today.
Join us on our Pink Houses tour to explore Charleston’s architectural history, told through the lens of its variety of pink buildings! 💕
(P.S. if you’re specifically looking for the pink houses of Rainbow Row, you’ll find them at 91 and 99-101 East Bay Street!)

Wishing a peaceful and happy Easter to all those celebrating today ☀️🌿
While walking around Charleston, you may notice dead and dried fronds clinging to the trees. But just wait until the next rain - these resurrection ferns might look dead, but they’ll perk right back up and flourish into lush green curls with enough moisture. We love spotting them clinging to massive live oaks or along old brick walls 🌿 (Layton, our naturalist guide, loves sharing stories about these and other native and introduced flora and fauna on our Walk on the Wild side tour!)

Did you know that today is National Gardening Day? Here’s a peek at what we love to spy in Charleston’s gardens and parks 👀🌸
All over Charleston, you can spot Peggy Martin roses, a popular variety here in the south, and for excellent reason: these hardy flowers are known to survive incredibly tough conditions.
They’re named for Peggy Martin, a woman from New Orleans who kept a carefully tended rose garden. When Hurricane Katrina made landfall, her garden was flooded with saltwater for weeks, and she thought all her roses were lost. But once the waters receded, she found one rose surviving, a climbing variety that she’d grown from a cutting given by a friend.
The one rose recovered, and Peggy shared cuttings with others in New Orleans. The rose was named for her and cultivated throughout flood-risk areas in the South.
Discover more about Charleston’s flora and fauna on our gardens and parks tour with naturalist Layton Register, as he shares his passion for the Lowcountry’s unique plants and wildlife, as well as the naturalists who have shaped the region!

🌼Yellow flowers abound in Charleston in springtime - but is it Jasmine or Jessamine? Well, yes!
The flower names jasmine and jessamine are often used interchangeably…because according to Merriam-Webster, the word “jessamine” is really just a variant of “jasmine.”
You’ll see plenty of both around Charleston this time of year! As the warm spring air fills with the soft sweet scents of yellow flowers growing on climbing vines, there are a few ways to tell them apart. 👀
Spot these and other beautiful blooms on a springtime walk with us as we share Charleston’s history and historic gossip. Or dive deeper into the region’s botanical history with naturalist guide Layton Register on our Walk on the Wild side tour, which takes you on a stroll through the historic district viewed through the lens of the plants and animals, both native and imported, that have shaped our surroundings. The Master’s Tournament has begun, and we know golf lovers are excited to watch!
Did you know that golf first came to America through South Carolina?
Golf balls and clubs were first recorded in the colonies in a shipment to Charleston in the 1740s. By the 1780s, the South Carolina Golf Club was regularly meeting at Harleston’s Green, a strip of land that stretched from Calhoun to Beaufain streets, and from Rutledge Avenue to the Ashley River.
Today, it remains a popular sport in the Lowcountry, with a variety of clubs and courses throughout the region!

🌸 a love letter to the STUNNING you might spot around town 😍 we’re also looking forward to seeing all the blooms at Augusta National during this week!
Did you know that the golf course was an indigo plantation until 1857? A Belgian Baron purchased the property and converted it into a nursery, introducing trees and other plants from all over the world. Today it’s famous not only as a golf course but also for its incredible azaleas - there are more than 30 varieties on the property! And while it makes a good story, the myth that the flowers are packed in ice to ensure that they bloom during the tournament is just that - a myth. But you know we don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story 😉
Will you be watching The Masters this week?

In addition to his brave fight for freedom, he was a champion of education, writing state legislation that provided for South Carolina to have the first free public school system in the United States! 📚
Follow in the footsteps of Smalls and other figures from Charleston’s Black History on our “In Their Footsteps” tour, with guide and Gullah-Geechee storyteller Fouché Sheppard. Head to the link in our bio to find our next scheduled event or to request this tour!
