Over tourism is a genuine concern across the globe. But in Africa, more so than many places, the consequences can be dire and irreversible.

To combat that, Pioneer Africa partners only with operators who have a clear path to zero emissions and fossil independence, and who operate in private reserves with limited access. Add community building to that philosophy and you have responsible tourism and increased reasons to preserve wild lands and wildlife.

Responsible tourism has long been emphasized as a selling point for safaris, but does reality match the promotion?

When photographing wildlife, things are not always pleasant. One captures events as they unfold, always documenting, good or bad.
This was one such incident where a female lion, with her own two cubs in tow, entered the den of another female and killed all four offspring. Intentionally. Deliberately. One by one. Bringing each out at a time.
I was close enough to hear each little neck snap and the horror has to be set aside in the knowledge and training that we as guides are not there to interfere.

A lone bull elephant was trying to figure us out. Once he was comfortable we were no threat he dusted himself off. A protection against the insect and the elements.

Feels like a cheetah kind of day today. The fastest of the felines also spend a lot of time sitting. And lying down. And sleeping. Mostly to make up for the energy-sapping bursts of energy required to pursue their prey.

Today’s safari photo highlights come to you courtesy of this happy hippo.
While a group of hippos is called a “bloat”, they are also referred to as a “pod” or a “crash”.
This fellow, however, was not invited to the party and is flying solo.

I love revisiting photos I’ve taken on safari. The memories of time and place flood back.
