UPDATE!! 4-18-26
We are beyond humbled and honored for the hundreds of comments we received and cannot THANK YOU enough! This support for a small business is what makes the Charlevoix community so strong!
Next Steps:
There is a City Council meeting Monday April 20th 6pm regarding two main votes:
- Vote A: While this does NOT directly affect us, A final vote to ban all BUS tours in residential areas will take place and public comment WILL be allowed on this topic.
- VOTE B: A vote to approve a PROPOSAL to ban ALL commercial tours in residential areas. IF the council approves this proposal, it will THEN proceed to a final vote at a later date.
*In conclusion, while the public can speak at any council meeting, they most likely won’t be taking comments on this proposal until it goes to an actual vote in a few weeks.
Our hope is that the HIGH volume of support emails that have already been sent by everyone will lead the Council to reject the proposal outright. If not, we will keep you posted of when the ACTUAL vote to ban the tours will occur.
We look forward to seeing you again this season, Mushroom House Tours
Original Post: Dear Community Members,
I am writing to share urgent news regarding the Mushroom House Tours. A group, including the owner of a recently purchased historic property, has formed with the goal of debilitating tourism in Charlevoix—starting with our tours.
The Mushroom House Tours/Historical Society Tours and Charlevoix Haunted History Tours are now in danger of being banned. This is a situation where wealthy summer residents are targeting local small businesses.
We have been in operation over 16 years and our mission has ALWAYS been to share the unique history of our town. We are the only company in the world offering tours of 28 homes built by Earl Young, who intended for these houses to be enjoyed by the entire community.
Furthermore, we take pride in supporting our fellow local business owners by consistently directing our patrons to other shops and restaurants in Charlevoix.
We are humbled by all the support we have already received but we still need your help to protect this local legacy. Please attend the upcoming City Council meeting to show your support for small businesses and the preservation of our town’s history. It is time to stand up and ensure that these tours can continue for years to come.
The meeting is April 20th at 6pm Charlevoix City Hall and or email Charlevoix City Council (emails available on www.charlevoixmi.gov)
