No Global Entry appointments available?

This is heard all too often. It can be tough to schedule a Global Entry appointment at a facility that is convenient for you, and in some instances, it can require waiting months or even a year!

The Enrollment on Arrival program, then, can be convenient for those who want to complete some of the formalities at the airport after an international trip. It's not as convenient as it sounds though — you must have already enrolled online and received conditional approval to be eligible for the Global Entry interview walk-in option. Of course, you'll also need to be arriving from a flight abroad, but at least you can complete the interview without an appointment.

What is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a membership program offered by the Department of Homeland Security. It requires a one-time application fee, a background check and an in-person interview. Once approved, your membership lasts for five years.

As a member, you'll receive expedited security screening through the TSA PreCheck lanes at participating domestic airports, as well as accelerated entry at eligible U.S. Customs locations.

Studies have shown that a change in our environment does the body and the mind good. If you've heard of the eight dimensions of wellness it talks about how environmental wellness intertwines with the other dimensions of wellness, specifically physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social. In short, traveling is not only a great experience, but it is also good for you.

Whether it be a solo trip, a baecation, a family trip, a couple's trip, a wellness retreat, or a group trip, travel should be an opportunity to relax, relate, and release. You may feel a myriad of emotions while on your trip (excitement, anticipation, amazement, joy, and even sadness) but one we want to avoid is regret. Traveling is a wonderful practice and to ensure that practice can be maintained, financial wellness and fiscal responsibility are important.

There are ways to enjoy the benefits of travel, both foreign and domestic without damaging your financial wellness. Here are a few tips that I have implemented with some of my clients:

1. Start a travel fund. Travel is an investment and just like an investment account you should add to your travel fund on a consistent basis, preferably every pay period. By doing this you are prepared to act when that group trip is announced or when your friend wants to get away.
2. Open a separate account for your travel fund. Yes! Open a separate account for that travel fund and even list it as your travel fund. Having a separate account for travel indicates priority and importance as well as giving yourself permission to take those trips.
3. Plan your savings. Many a group trip is planned well in advance which gives you the opportunity to put together a savings plan and trip budget. If you know the journey is in eight months and costs $5000, then you also know you can break that down into pieces and save at least $625 per month.
4. Travel as a credit strategy. Obtain a credit card that gives points for travel and use that card solely for travel and accommodations. This strategy along with the aforementioned not only will improve your credit score (because you've saved for the trip and can pay it in full after charging it) but will also reward you for traveling.
