Dena R. Diorio is a veteran public administrator who made history as the first woman to serve as Mecklenburg County Manager, leading one of North Carolina’s largest urban counties for more than a decade. She joined Mecklenburg County government in 2007 as chief financial officer, then became assistant county manager in 2013 before being selected as county manager at the end of 2013, formally stepping into the role in 2014. As manager, Diorio guided the county through post‑recession recovery, rapid population growth, and major investments in infrastructure, affordable housing, public health, and early‑childhood initiatives like MECK Pre‑K while maintaining strong credit ratings and disciplined budgeting. After more than 11 years in the top job, she retired effective July 1, 2025, handing the reins to successor Mike Bryant and closing a trailblazing chapter in Mecklenburg County governance.
