We’re spending all day on the boat today as we cruise up the Columbia river through the Dalles and the Gorge. I am going to post a couple of pictures, but they in no way show the awesome beauty of this place. The river is smooth and there is very little traffic commercial or private on the river. On both sides of the river there’s dry arrid hills; earlier this morning, we could see snow covered Mount Hood in the distance. A little while ago, we passed through a lock that raised us 130 feet.

After breakfast this morning, we boarded our coach and drove to Fort Clatsop. This is a fort that Lewis and Clark built at the end of their core of discovery, which is what they called their journey across the country. They spent several months here resting and waiting for warm weather before they begin their trek back to Washington, DC. The fort you see in the photos is not the original but and exact reconstruction of the original based on notes and drawings of the original. I was surprised how small the fort was, but it was not built just for defensive purposes. The men needed better conditions in which to rest and spend several months then they had during their journey.

Yesterday we visited the visitor center at Mt. St. Helens, about 10 miles from the base of the volcano.  When Saint Helens erupted in 1980 it laid waste to everything in a 20 mile radius. The trees and other foliage you see in the photographs have all germinated and grown naturally since the eruption. Nothing was planted. It is all natural growth.

On this day we relaxed as we took the ferry to Inis Oirr, one of the Aran Islands just outside Galway Bay. We road around the island on donkey pulled carts, sipped a bit of Irish whiskey, and took the ferry back to Galway after a beautiful cruise past the Cliffs of Moher. I had never seen the Cliffs from the sea so I was quite impressed.

Yesterday was fascinating and fun day. We took the ferry from the West Coast of Ireland to one of the.Aran islands. After a visit to the local pub and nice warm Irish coffee, we walked around the island. We rode carts, pulled by horses around the island where we saw horses, cows, and sheep grazing., the Hulk of a ship that crashed on the rocks and was abandoned the years ago, and on the return trip, we passed by the Cliffs of Moher. The previous day we had stood a top the cliffs and looked down at the ocean but today we were at the bottom looking up wow.

Yesterday we took the ferry from the West Coast of Ireland to one of the Aran Islands. It was a little bit on the cold side, but not uncomfortable. after an Irish coffee we walked a bit and then took a horse and buggy ride. As we rode close to the sea, we could see an old ship that had struck the rocks and was abandoned. Everyone is so impressed with all the rocks and how they build walls using those rocks.  On the ferry ride back to the mainland we cruised past the Cliffs
of Moher which we had seen the previous day from on top. Both views, looking down for the top and looking up from the sea are spectacular.

What a great time tonight at the medieval banquet in Bunratty Castle built in the 12th century. Great food and great entertainment with the entertainers dressed in period Costumes.  low light main photography difficult.

I would like to say it was brisk this morning, but actually is cold , in the mid 50s, but it’s gonna warm up to 62 today. I’m actually looking forward to getting back to Charlotte and 90+ degrees temperature .
