Those of you who have read my book The Corpsewood Manor Murders in North Georgia know that I talk some about the renowned artist Howard Finster in there, including how he first began painting when God came to him in a vision in a glob of paint while he was repairing a bike and said, "Paint sacred art." Howard resisted, saying he didn't know how, to which God responded, "How do you know??"
So Howard pulled out a dollar bill, stuck it to a piece of wood, and painted his very first piece of sacred art, a portrait of George Washington, on the side of a building.
I took a photo of it a few years back, but by that time it was very eroded, and I was so happy recently to finally find again the photo I'd taken of it back in 2013, when it was in much better shape. The folks at Paradise Garden have never made a big deal of it, to my knowledge- the first time I saw it, I'd gotten Jordan Poole, the director there, to show me where it was. It's way in the back on the side of a building. So very few people have seen this, or known what it was. I hope you enjoy this piece of history.
