🇺🇸 Memorial Day Weekend has arrived in Cheboygan… and with it comes the unofficial start to SUMMER in Northern Michigan. ☀️🌊

There is just something special about this season here.

The boats are beginning to fill our waterways, downtown is buzzing back to life, trails are calling, music is filling the air, and our small-town charm is ready to welcome you home — whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to your favorite summer traditions. ❤️

This spring tested us in ways we didn’t expect. Like many Northern Michigan communities, we faced flooding and difficult days. But if there’s one thing about Cheboygan, it’s this: we know how to come together, lift each other up, and move forward stronger than before.

⭐️⭐️Today, we’re shining the spotlight on one of the true treasures of our downtown and community, the historic Cheboygan Opera House ⭐️⭐️

Standing proudly in the heart of downtown since 1888, the Opera House has long been more than just a building, it’s a place where stories come to life, where generations have gathered, and where culture, creativity, music, laughter, and community spirit continue to thrive.

From concerts and comedy shows to theater productions, children’s programming, community events, and unforgettable live performances, the Cheboygan Opera House continues to bring vibrant arts and entertainment to Northern Michigan while preserving the rich history and charm that make our community so special.

There is something truly magical about walking through those doors, hearing the buzz of anticipation before a performance, and watching our historic stage light up with talent from near and far. It reminds us that even in a small town, big culture lives here. ❤️

The Cheboygan County Waterways Closure has been lifted. While conditions are improving, water levels throughout the county remain above normal and the public is urged to continue using extreme caution while boating and recreating on local waterways.

Recent flooding and storm activity have created hazardous conditions on many lakes, rivers, and channels. Debris such as logs, branches, docks, and other floating objects may still be present both above and below the water surface. The Cheboygan County Sheriff Office warns that high water conditions can create stronger currents, colder water temperatures, submerged hazards, and unpredictable navigation conditions.

Boaters are encouraged to reduce speed, especially in narrow channels, near shorelines, and in areas where navigational markers may be difficult to see due to elevated water levels. Operators should maintain a proper lookout at all times and be prepared for sudden obstacles in the water. Residents and visitors are also reminded to avoid creating excessive wakes, as shoreline erosion and property damage remain concerns in many impacted areas.

For your safety:

• Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
• Keep a safe distance from debris and flooded shorelines.
• Avoid operating watercraft under the influence of alcohol.
• Carry a charged cell phone or marine radio in case of emergency.
• Respect private property, docks, and shoreline structures that may still be damaged from recent flooding.

The safety of our residents and visitors remains a priority as recovery efforts continue across Cheboygan County.
