🗝️ One of the most remarkable responsibilities in Islamic history is the guardianship of the Key of the Kaaba.

For over 1,400 years, the honored family of Banu Shaybah (Banu Talhah) has been entrusted with safeguarding the key to Islam’s holiest site. 🕋

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered Makkah during the Conquest of Makkah, he was given the key to the Kaaba. Despite having complete authority, he returned it to its rightful custodians and said:

“Take it, O Banu Talhah. It will remain with you forever. None shall take it from you except a tyrant.”

✨ This powerful moment became a lasting symbol of trust, justice, and honoring commitments in Islam.

🔑 Today, members of the Banu Shaybah family still carry out this sacred responsibility, overseeing the opening and closing of the Kaaba and caring for its key generation after generation.

📏 The current Kaaba key is made of metal and measures approximately 35 cm (14 inches) in length. Throughout history, different keys have been used, many of which are now preserved in museums as priceless Islamic artifacts.

🤲 The Kaaba itself is opened only on special occasions, where invited guests have the rare opportunity to enter and pray inside the House of Allah.

🌍 Millions of Muslims face the Kaaba in prayer every day, yet only a handful of people in each generation are entrusted with the key to its door.

🕋 You Can Visit the Place Where the Kiswa (majestic black covering) Is Made

Behind every thread of the Holy Kiswa is an incredible year-long journey of craftsmanship, precision, and devotion. 🇸🇦✨

📍 The Kiswa is handcrafted at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa in Makkah.

📊 Amazing Kiswa Facts:

🖤 Made from approximately 670 kg of natural silk

✨ Embroidered with around 120 kg of gold-plated silver thread and 100 kg of silver thread

📖 Contains 68 Quranic verses embroidered in gold and silver

🧵 Consists of 47 separate silk panels

⚖️ Total weight: approximately 1,415 kg (over 1.4 tons)

⏳ Takes nearly 11 months to produce

👷 More than 200 skilled Saudi craftsmen and specialists contribute to its creation

🔄 The Kiswa is replaced every year on the 1st of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

🏗️ Production passes through 7 major stages:

1️⃣ Washing & water preparation
2️⃣ Silk dyeing
3️⃣ Weaving

5️⃣ Embroidery

🤲 Before Hajj each year, the lower part of the Kiswa is raised approximately 3 meters and protected with a white cloth to preserve it from damage during the massive crowds of pilgrims performing Tawaf.
