For Week 2 of our New Student Orientation Tours with The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, we explored the neighborhoods of Chinatown and Bronzeville, taking in sites like the architecturally-stunning Ping Tom Park and making time for a stop at the oldest bakery in Chinatown, Chiu Quon Bakery.

While in Bronzeville, we spent time at the Light of Truth Monument and the Historic Wabash YMCA. The stories of oppression and triumph for Chinese and African-Americans in Chicago have many similarities, which we discussed throughout the tour—and it was a powerful reminder of the connections that can be found across Chicago’s neighborhoods, histories and cultures. 💙💚

It was such a beautiful moment and an honor to give a tour of the South Side to my Pastor, Rev. Dr. D. Darrell Griffin of Oakdale Covenant Church (), and his family, who came into town from Milwaukee, Atlanta, and beyond! ❤️

There’s something special about sharing the history, culture, people, and places that make the South Side so meaningful to me. Grateful for the opportunity to connect, fellowship, and show them a little more of the beauty that lives right here in our community. Thank you Pastor! 🥰🙏🏽

This reel just might heal you…

Last Friday, we spent some time in the great outdoors for the Third Annual Urban Birding Festival. We explored:

📍South Shore Nature Sanctuary
📍Park No. 566
📍Rainbow Beach Park

Participants had an amazing time birding and learning more about the history of the South Shore neighborhood.

We ended our day hearing from Alvyn Walker of the Windsor Park Community Garden, along with smoothies from our friends at Good Health Foods on 73rd and Jeffrey!

HUGE thanks to Sunshine Soledá de Vries and Nayla Hale of the for their intentional partnership!

South Side Tours is proud to be back for our second year providing tour programming for New Student Orientation at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy!
