Seems like the weather is back on track with our daily dose of rain showers. All the vegetation seems happy again, and grows two feet overnight. With the busiest weekend on the water coming up, we just want to remind people to please be safe. Whether you're on the river, the Gulf, or any other waterway, make sure you have all your safety equipment, especially life jackets, for all passengers on board. Use caution, by slowing down in shallow or narrow waterways. Be respectful of residential areas and no wake zones. There will be a lot of boats, kayaks, and people out in the water. If we all just take an extra second to be aware of our surroundings, it can make it a safer and enjoyable day for everyone!

It was a beautiful warm weekend, followed by some much needed rain on Sunday. All kinds of wildlife were out enjoying that sun, especially our gator friends. We saw hundreds of gators, large and small, out enjoying that warm sunshine. We also spotted a few stray manatees, eating some vegetation along the river's banks. This past week we had the pleasure of taking out an awesome photographer, Ken Rohling, out on a Suwannee river tour. He was able to catch some great photos, of the massive Gulf Sturgeon that are found in the river.

Gulf sturgeon grow to be quite large. Over 8 feet in length and can weigh over 300 pounds. Their bodies are covered in bony armor plates, which link them back to their pre-historic roots, which date back over 250 million years.

They are found spending their winters in the Gulf, where the water is cool. Then around April, as the Gulf starts heating up, the Sturgeon come up the Suwannee river, where the water is a bit cooler. Especially in the deep holes around the springs.

In the summer months, boaters have to be cautious along the river. These massive fish can leap feet out of the water, causing injuries, and even fatalities. So if you're out on the Suwannee river, slow down, relax, and enjoy the day, watching all the amazing wildlife all around you.

After the rain, the sun always shines! And it was a beautiful day on Sunday! We ran a couple morning and afternoon tours, and met some amazing people. Most coming from South Florida, they were all amazed with the rural beauty of the river and our area. We feel blessed, to show others something that is really hard to still see anywhere. There are so many little channels and slues along the Suwannee River. Some man made from the old logging days, and some natural. Great spots to just stop and admire the wildlife resting in a peaceful serene setting. Sometimes you see gators and turtles, just basking in the sun. Or maybe a lone manatee, that pops up beside your boat to say a friendly hello. It's always a beautiful day out on the lower Suwannee River.

Yesterday we were happy to help out the Friends of the Lower Suwannee and Cedar Key Wildlife Refuge, along with other volunteers and organizations, help clean up the lower Suwannee down by Vista and Fowler's Bluff. Multiple boats went out to certain areas, to pick up trash and old storm debris found along the shore. Where there wasn't a lot of small debris, there were a few large old dock sections, foam, barrels, and tons of old tangled trot lines. It was a very rewarding day. Thank you to everyone who came to help keep our area beautiful!
