This past week we had the pleasure of taking out an awesome photographer, Ken Rohling, out on a Suwannee river tour. He was able to catch some great photos, of the massive Gulf Sturgeon that are found in the river.
Gulf sturgeon grow to be quite large. Over 8 feet in length and can weigh over 300 pounds. Their bodies are covered in bony armor plates, which link them back to their pre-historic roots, which date back over 250 million years.
They are found spending their winters in the Gulf, where the water is cool. Then around April, as the Gulf starts heating up, the Sturgeon come up the Suwannee river, where the water is a bit cooler. Especially in the deep holes around the springs.
In the summer months, boaters have to be cautious along the river. These massive fish can leap feet out of the water, causing injuries, and even fatalities. So if you're out on the Suwannee river, slow down, relax, and enjoy the day, watching all the amazing wildlife all around you.
