One of the coolest things to happen in The Town of Marion, Virginia in the past few years is the return of movies to The Lincoln Theatre. When it opened in 1929, they called it a "movie palace," and if you've ever been inside, you can tell why. Watching a film at the Lincoln just feels glamorous. This week you have THREE chances to catch a flick!

Golden Oldies:
Golden Oldies: Cinema Classics will be held on July 8 at 11 AM. This free program pulls the audience back in time to experience The Lincoln Theatre in its “movie palace” days. The Lincoln will be highlighting many classics throughout the year and looking back at the original programming. July’s film will be Suddenly (1954) starring Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden, and James Gleason.

Thirsty Thursday:
The Lincoln’s Thirsty Thursday happy hour program continues on July 10. This month features the cult classic coming-of-age story Dazed and Confused (1992), directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jason London, Matthew McConaughey, and Joey Lauren Adams. There will be a selection of beer and wine available for sale, along with a themed specialty cocktail. The doors will open at 6:30 PM for the 7 PM screening. Tickets for the film can be purchased online or at the door for $5. Also, check out the full 2025 calendar of events and discover a variety of Friday and Thursday night film screenings throughout the year.

Film Freaks is a free educational-based film experience that includes a lecture, film screening, and live discussion. The second half of 2025 is kicking off with a deep dive into Film Theory. Curator Katelin Aanerud will be leading a lecture on Auteur Theory on July 11 at 7 PM. She will discuss the French origins of the term, film theorists like Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael, and move on to pinpoint some of the most important auteurs in film history. Following the film, there will be a guided discussion to encourage the audience to think critically and academically while sharing opinions on the art of movies.

Celebrate our Nation’s Independence with a Fireworks Display Sunday July 6, 2025!

Smyth County and the Town of Marion will celebrate Independence Day with an evening of baseball and fireworks, Sunday July 6, 2025.

What time do the fireworks start?
The fireworks display will start immediately after the 6:30 baseball game featuring the Marion Hungry Mothers vs. the Greensboro Ducks (tickets at hungrymothersbaseball.com).

Where are the fireworks?
The fireworks will be set off near Marion Senior High School. The best viewing will be from Hurricane Stadium, the summer home of the Marion Hungry Mothers. Fireworks will also be visible along Lee Highway in Marion, east of the railroad crossing.

Is there a cost?
To view the fireworks from Hurricane Stadium or the MSHS parking lot, you must purchase a ticket to the game ($8 at the door, or slightly less if you purchase online). Kids 3 and under are free!

Where can I find parking?
Parking for the baseball game is available at the Senior Lot along Stage Street, and the Student Lot on Stadium Road. Town and County officials will be closing certain other areas near the high school for a safety zone, so if you are not attending the game, we encourage you to view the fireworks from any of the various parking lots along Lee Highway/North Main Street.

Will there be food available at the game?
Yes! Concessions are provided by the Marion Band Boosters, and all proceeds benefit the Band. Polar Express Shaved Ice will be on hand as well! Note – no outside food or drink is permitted inside the stadium.

Why are the fireworks on July 6th and not July 4th?
We tried our best, but they were already booked on the 4th! We’re looking forward to celebrating our nation’s founding all weekend long.

Thank you to the Marion Town Council and Smyth County Board of Supervisors for funding the fireworks display!
