One of the cool things about being out on the water with Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises… you never know what might turn up in a crab trap.

This is a Channeled Whelk, a big sea snail that roams the bottom of the bay. Nature gave it a strong foot and a rough tongue called a radula that helps it pry open clams and oysters for dinner. Pretty wild little creature when you stop and look at it up close.

These are the kinds of things we come across every day out here — the real working waters and wildlife of the Eastern Shore. Not something you usually see unless you slow down and spend some time on the bay.

Extreme low tide today gave these aquaculture farmers rare access to the bay bottom. They’re planting tiny baby clams — about the size of a fingernail — by sprinkling them across the bottom like grass seed.

Next, they carefully unroll protective nets over the area to keep predators from feeding on the young clams. Heavy metal rods are placed around the edges to secure the nets tightly to the bottom.

Over the next 2–3 years, these clams will grow in the clean, nutrient-rich waters of our back bays before being harvested and brought to market. Healthy waters help produce strong, delicious clams — after all, you are what you eat.

These are the kinds of real working-waterfront moments you may see on a Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruise. Every trip is different, and you never know what slice of island life the tide will reveal next.

Sometimes the best parts of island life happen quietly—if you slow down enough to notice.

Today, while out on my boat, I passed a friend of mine, a commercial fisherman, unloading fresh seafood straight from the water. No show, no spotlight—just honest work, salt air, strong hands, and a way of life that still runs deep here.

This is the real deal—the life of a waterman.
Almost like a backstage pass to the working waterfront that many people never get to see.

Island life—raw, authentic, and timeless. ⚓️🦀🌊

Out on the water yesterday running trips and caught a great sight—Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company doing what they do best.

They were set up in the channel drafting straight from the bay, running it through the pumper and sending it high overhead off the ladder truck. No hydrants out here—just good equipment, know-how, and teamwork.

This wasn’t an emergency, just training—but this is exactly how they stay ready for when it is.

One more reason I love being out on the water every day—you never know what you’ll see on a trip.
