On April 1st, Mexico updated its regulations for Temporary Importation Permits (TIPs) for boats, reducing the time amount on the permit from 10 years to 5 years for each permit. Boats may still get two permits, but with the permit reduction to 5 years each, the lifetime importation time for a boat is now limited to 10 years. Permits previously issued for 10 years are not affected and owners may get a second permit for an additional 5 years.

More information can be found on our Boat TIP page.

Every boat over 4.5 meters (15 feet) that will be going down to Baja, Mexico needs to have a temporary boat import permit (TIP).

On Sunday, February 22, the Mexican Government killed "El Mencho," the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The event incited acts of violence throughout Mexico as trucks and other vehicles were lit on fire. The U.S. embassy sent out an alert for parts of mainland and the state of Baja California (norte) advising that U.S. citizens shelter in place due to ongoing security operations and related road blockages. We recommend that you register for the U.S. State Department's STEP (Smart Traveller Enrollment Program) in order to receive important updates and alerts about Mexico from the U.S. embassy or consulate.

We advise that you delay travel to Baja California for a few days while things settle down. We will keep our Road Conditions page updated with current information.

Can you help identify this vessel? Let us know!

A message from Peter Jensen, a Baja maritime historian specializing in documenting shipwrecks around the peninsula:

"I am hoping some of your members can help identify a particular vessel. It is a steel-hulled tugboat, partially sunk in about 10 feet of water at San Juan de la Costa, just north of the pier, in Bahia de La Paz. She is clearly visible from the shoreline road. Ideally, I would like to learn her name. Any further details such as date - or approximate date, even just year - of her loss, cause of sinking, her age, owner, any known history, and/or anything else would be very much appreciated. If there are any early photos of her, I would be grateful to include them in the book with full credit given to the photographer."

TRAVEL ALERT: There are peaceful protests taking place along Highway Mexico 1 in San Quintín, El Rosario, and Camalú where they are blocking the highway. They are only allowing traffic through once every hour. Avoid the area if possible and expect delays if you need to travel through the area. If possible, we advise you to take Highway Mexico 3 which is open and passable. We advise you to use the Tecate border crossing and take Highway Mexico 3 is your destination is north of San Quintín (to avoid the construction along the I-5 at the San Ysidro crossing). Use the Mexicali border crossing and take Highway Mexico 5 to avoid the protests if your destination is south of San Quintín.
