Jersey Central Chapter of the NRHS

Jersey Central Chapter of the NRHS The Jersey Central Chapter formed in 1980. A group dedicated to railroad history, preservation & restoration. http://jcrhs.org/

The Jersey Central Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, NRHS, was formed in 1980 as a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation and restoration of railroad and railroad related equipment, structures, photographs and literature. To this extent, the group's members have restored, or donated funds for others to restore, several pieces of railroad rolling stock owned by the chapter

or the United Railroad Historical Society, URHS, of which JCRHS is a member. We have donated funds for the restoration and painting of URHS owned CNJ GP-7 No. 1523 and GG-1 4877 and have supported financially the restoration of the Centerville and Southwestern Railroad, an operating 2" scale model railroad, located at the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians site in Phillipsburg, NJ. Jersey Central's restored Erie caboose C-177 is on display at the Whippany Railway Museum. Jersey Central holds monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the American Legion Hall in Westfield, NJ. For more information concerning our meetings, please visit our Meetings Page. Membership information can be found on our Membership Page which includes an application form.

Eagle-eyed commuters may have noticed something a little different at Harmon Shops the past few weeks… We are excited to confirm that our New York Central Hickory Creek, Swift Stream, and Tavern-Lounge 43 are on loan to MTA Metro-North Railroad! The cars will be a part of the railroad’s annual employee appreciation Holiday Trains this December.

This means that we will have the opportunity to see these historic cars in world-famous Grand Central Terminal once again! This landmark was home to all three cars from the start of their careers in the 1940s. The Hickory Creek, for 19 years, departed from or arrived at this station every single day as part of the World’s Most Famous Train, the 20th Century Limited. This is a rare and exciting homecoming for these cars, and we cannot wait to roll out the red carpet with our partners at Metro-North!

Keep an eye out for our fleet in Grand Central periodically during the first two weeks of December!

This Sunday, we are excited to welcome TWO special visiting exhibits to Railroad Museum [for a day] 2024!

NJ TRANSIT’s no. 4210 is one of the oldest locomotives in regular service in New Jersey, built in 1968. Today it is painted in honor of NJT predecessor, the Erie Railroad, which existed from 1832 to 1960 and laid some of the state’s earliest commuter lines.

Accompanying it is ALP-45A No. 4550, one of the newest locomotives on NJ TRANSIT. At only a little more than a year old, it represents the newest rail technology in America. It is a dual mode locomotive, which means it can run on both overhead catenary and diesel. This Sunday, it will be displayed alongside two of its electric predecessors, the ALP-44 (built 1996) and the GG1 (built 1939), representing more than eight decades of electrically-powered trains in New Jersey.

For train buffs, the best time to get your photos is early in the day! Beat the line by buying your ticket online at https://www.urhs.org/museumforaday

We sincerely thank NJ TRANSIT for their partnership on this event!
