Happy Friday...Here is today's fun fact:
Looking at you...Maldives.
This country is located in the north-central Indian Ocean and is made up of 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks, grouped together in clusters or atolls.
These islands have been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC by Buddhists, probably from Sri Lanka and southern India.
Islam was adopted in the islands in 1153 CE
The Portuguese established themselves in Male from 1558 to 1573. Then the Dutch in the 17th century, and then the British in 1796.
Then, in 1965, it attained full political independence from the British. The last British troops left on March 29th, 1976.
The earliest form of currency was supposedly the cowrie shell, introduced by Arab merchants in the 13th century.
December 2004 saw the Maldives being hit by a large tsunami caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
In 2009, the Maldives government held a meeting underwater, so they could raise awareness about rising sea levels threatening the country.
There is so much more in these islands' history.
Have you been? Would you like to go? Would you want a beach room or an overwater bungalow?
