Winter storm Fern is expected to be historic in its scale. 34 states and 220 million people. That is more than half of the United States. Stay warm and off the roads if possible. Staying connected is important to know what to expect and to get help if needed. More people die from gas generators than storm emergencies so make sure you follow the warnings if you have one. It needs to be outside and from the house. Do not put it in a garage even with the door open. And store gas safely. The aftermath of Melissa is just starting to trickle through but before and after satellite pictures of the hardest hit cities shows almost all buildings are flattened. Almost nothing can survive 185 mph winds. The first plane loads of emergency supplies are arriving from the UK.

New Reports are just starting to come in from Jamaica which was hit by Hurricane Melissa as a Cat 5, the strongest hurricane to hit Jamaica in history. Melissa was in fact 10 milli bars lower in pressure than Katrina making it more powerful. Power is out and the city of Montego bay is split in two by flooding. Many people are on their roofs due to flooding, reminiscent of Katrina. With sustained winds of 185 mph only the strongest building remain standing. Melissa now a Cat 3 moves on to Cuba.

Remembering Hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico many houses had solar on their roofs, an attractive option in the Caribbean with its abundant sunshine, but with the the roofs blown away by the Hurricane force winds, so went the solar.

Hurricane Melissa has become a Cat 5. It is expected to hit Jamaica Tuesday. The winds alone will knock down anything but the sturdiest buildings and storm surge of 13 feet and 40 inches of rain portend devastation for the poor island. It is expected to and skirt the east coast making for a wet end of October and halloween.

It is just the first half of October and the East coast is getting lashed with wind and rain and the all the numbers say it is a classic Northeaster. A strong low pressure zone moving up the east coast hitting all the large metropolitan areas, from DC,to NY on on to Boston.

So batten down the hatches as you are in for a blow!

Tropical storm Jerry is mid Atlantic. It is expected to become a hurricane and approach the Caribbean Islands. whether it will make land fall on the mainland US it is too early to tell..

Hurricane Humberto became a Cat 5 briefly before settling back down to a massive cat 4. Imelda is expected to strengthen to a Cat 2 by tomorrow, Tuesday. Both are now expected to stay off shore and not make landfall. tTe Islands and coastal regions can still expect wind rain and heavy surf.

Tropical depression 9 that is now near the Bahamas, Cuba and Florida is expected to move up but off the Florida coast and strengthen to a Cat one or two hurricane, Imelda. Then it is to turn right after moving up the east coast and turn right out to sea and not make land fall. But hold the phone, Humberto a Cat 4 is coming in from further out to sea on Imeldas right side and how they will interact, let’s see?

Hurricane Humberto has strengthened to a Cat 4 but closer to home there is fear that tropical depression 9 will turn into Imelda. Aiming at Florida and the Carolinas is this one two punch. As Oct. approaches and the midpoint of the height of the hurricane season the Atlantic is very active.

Typhoon Ragasa a Cat 5 Hurricane equivalent has ravaged the Philippines and Hong Kong and killed 17 in Taiwan and now has made landfall in China. A lake burst it banks in Taiwan causing a landslide leading to the deaths.

Closer to the US, Gabrielle continues to churn in the mid atlantic far from land and Narda on the west coast is headed south of California. Of concern are two tropical depressions that appear to be aiming for the East Coast.
