Typhoon Kajiki is lashing the Vietnam coast with winds up to 80 mph and heavy rain. Half a million people have been evacuated. Last year Typhoon Yagi killed 300.

Hurricane Fernand is in the mid Atlantic and moving North North East and not expected to make landfall. Tropical depression is in the South Caribbean and bears watching.

Tropical storm Juliette In the East Pacific is the tenth storm in this region this season. It is still too far west to effect the West coast of Mexico but that could change.

Hurricane Erin is impacting the East coast as it has expanded to a 250 mile radius. The Beach communities have closed from the Carolinas to Virgina. Wrightsville Beach reports 60 rescues for rip tide. Erin is not expected to make land fall but the coasts will be impacted with wind rain and surf.

Two more tropical depressions have formed mid Atlantic and eastern Atlantic in rapid succession as we are in the beginning to peak hurricane season.

Hurricane Erin has rapidly strengthened to a Cat 5. It is brushing by Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands with strong wind and rain. Next it is expected to turn right and brush the east coast starting with the Carolina’s.

The good news is no land fall or extreme damage is expected despite the powerful storm.

Two days into the peak of the hurricane season that goes August 15 to Oct 15 we have a major hurricane so be warned and prepare.

Hurricane Erin strengthened rapidly and is now a Cat 4. It is approaching the virgin islands and Puerto Rico. It is expected to turn northward and skirt the East coast.

An we are now in the peak or hurricane season the first major hurricane of the season is approaching the US eastern seaboard.

Tropical storm Erin is now mid Atlantic and headed westward. It is expected to become a hurricane in a day or two. Landfall is expected this weekend.

Two days from the beginning of the most active part of hurricane season Aug. 15 to Oct. 15 and a Hurricane is expected to make landfall this weekend coinciding with the start of the most active part of the season.

Preparing mean taking action in advance so prepare now. Emergency plans include shelter, food, water, escape routes if necessary emergency lights and power. Anything you need to survive on your own for 3-7 days minimum if you are n an effected area.

August 14 is also the anniversary or the August 14 2003 blackout that effected 50 million people. A minor event in Ohio cascaded to knock out power to large areas of the Northeast. Experts now believe that by 2030 we will be 100 times more likely to repeat the 2003 event due to the continued retiring of base load power plants with no replacement.

There are two tropical storms currently, Dexter in the Atlantic and headed North east away from population centers and Henriette in the East Central Pacific moving east. Two tropical depressions are also active. One off the coast of the Carolinas and likely to drench the east coast and one off the coast of Africa heading west toward the East Coast of the USA.

It is early in the hurricane season but already a Cat 4 is making landfall on the west coast of Mexico near Acapulco. NOAA predicts an above average hurricane season. Currently there is no activity in the Atlantic but Erick in the Pacific is packing life threatening and devastating winds.

The Cannes film festival in souther France lost power and the cause has been ruled suspicious. A fire apparently was set deliberately. A few days later power was cut again. There were tire tracks leading to a substation and the lock was broken. This highlights how vulnerable the grid is. Stretching over hundreds of miles and often in remote areas it is impossible to protect. Recently proponents have suggested that rather than the one are centralized grid a decentralized approach is better so a problem in one area is localized. Especially with smaller generating plants, renewable and conventional are adding strength to this argument.

The forecast for hurricane season starting June 1 has come out and again it is predicted to be an above average season.

Deadly Tornados moved across Kentucky killing 14 as wave after wave or storms continue to cross the mid west to the east. Two weeks till the start of hurricane season but the focus is on the non stop waves of storms that come every week this spring.
