Europe Has Strict New Rules This Summer
Europe is still an incredible place to spend a summer, but fair warning, it is not quite the same as it used to be, even just a year ago. Cities and landmarks across the continent are really cracking down on overtourism, and that comes with new fees, visitor caps, and rules that every traveler needs to know about before jetting off.
Everything you need to know:
🗼 The Louvre doubled its entry fee for non-EU visitors to $38
🎨 Spain's Prado museum announced a cap on visitor numbers earlier this year
⛪ Cologne Cathedral could soon charge non-worshippers $13-17 to enter
⛲ Rome's Trevi Fountain now charges $2 to access the basin where visitors toss coins
🍹 Split, Croatia, is considering a ban on alcohol sales from shops during certain hours
🏝️ Capri is capping tour groups at 40 people during the summer, so be sure to book early
🥾 Madeira is limiting hikers on its most popular trails and raising entry fees
🛶 Venice's day-tripper fee returns this summer. It ranges from $5.50 to $11 for last-minute bookings
🏙️ Barcelona plans to double its nightly tourist tax
🏖️ Greece is introducing crowd control measures at popular island beaches during peak season
✈️ Portugal has been expanding tourist tax zones to smaller cities beyond Lisbon and Porto
Most of these changes are hard to argue with. These places have been overrun for years, and a few extra dollars in fees is a small price to pay to keep them standing. My advice is always to book early and budget a little extra. Europe is still very much worth it.
