If you’re booking a fishing charter—especially your first—do your homework. We are a licensed charter in Connecticut, and I’ve fished with pros up and down the coast. Some are fantastic, others not so much—and a few are downright unsafe.
First, make sure your captain is U.S. Coast Guard licensed and operating a fully legal, insured charter. That means liability coverage, safety inspections, and all required state and federal permits. Avoid the Facebook Googans offering to “take you out for gas money”—it’s illegal and dangerous. No license means no insurance, no oversight, and no protection if something goes wrong. Ask to see credentials—any legit captain will gladly show them.
Don’t go with the cheapest option just to save a few bucks. A proper operation has real costs—insurance, fuel, maintenance—and you’re paying for safety and experience. Your captain should build the trip around you, your goals, and the conditions—not just drift the same spot every day.
They should bring energy to the trip, adapt when the bite slows, and work hard to put you on fish. Great captains are passionate, knowledgeable, flexible, and genuinely want you to have a memorable day. Lastly, choose someone who respects the fishery, follows the rules, and promotes sustainable practices. The sport only survives if we protect it.
Ask questions, do your research, and book with someone who runs a clean, safe, and professional operation. I’m always happy to help with questions or recommendations—even if it’s not with me.
