My favorite souvenir from Japan cost less than most airport gift shop purchases!

When I visited Tokyo, I wanted to bring home something that felt more meaningful than a t-shirt or keychain.

That’s when I discovered goshuin books.

A goshuin book is used to collect beautiful hand-written stamps and calligraphy from Japanese shrines and temples. For a small fee, each location creates a unique entry, creating a one-of-a-kind keepsake from your travels.

What I loved most was that it encouraged me to slow down and appreciate each shrine and temple I visited rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

Now when I flip through my book, I don’t just see stamps and calligraphy…I remember the places I visited and the experiences I had there.

It’s easily one of my favorite things I brought home from Japan.

One of my favorite parts of planning trips is helping travelers discover experiences like this—the kinds of things that often don’t make the “Top 10 Things to Do” lists but end up becoming some of the most meaningful memories.

Going to Japan in July.

The heat? Brutal.

The humidity? Unmatched.

The daily step count? Somewhere between “healthy” and “Olympic training.”

At various points during the trip, I was convinced I had melted into the Tokyo sidewalk.

And yet…

I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Because between the incredible food, beautiful shrines, neon cityscapes, and unforgettable experiences, somehow the suffering becomes part of the story.

That’s Type 2 Fun: not always enjoyable in the moment, but absolutely worth it afterward.

And honestly? I’d still recommend Japan to almost anyone—I’d just suggest packing a portable fan and mentally preparing to sweat. 😅

Maybe I’m just trying to make younger me proud….the girl who spent hours dreaming about castles and oceans and big cities. Places she had never seen before!

I think part of me always knew there was more to explore outside my little corner of the world 💜✈️

And honestly? I still feel that way every single time I step on a plane.

I think that’s also why I love helping other people plan trips so much. I still get the excitement and wonderment my clients feel when they go some place they have never been….or someplace they have been a billion times!!

Travel has a way of becoming part of your story, I’ll never stop believing that there’s something really special about that.
