Still reflecting on last week’s presentation by Dr. Paul Hutton, Interim Curator of the Buffalo Bill Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. His insights on the enduring significance of the American West were powerful and thought-provoking.

I’m diving into his book The Undiscovered Country with excitement and curiosity.

Can’t wait to explore more of the stories that have shaped our history and continue to influence our future.

(Thanks to Legends Bookstore for saving me a copy!)

As summer fades and the kids head back to school, Cody’s rhythm shifts, and so do the faces we see walking through town. While summer brings energy, families, and fast-paced fun, fall invites a slower, more intentional traveler: retirees, empty-nesters, and lifelong explorers who are here to savor everything our community has to offer.

These visitors stay longer, spend more on quality experiences, and seek out local art, culture, and hospitality. They’re looking for comfort, connection, and authenticity—and they’re finding it right here in Cody.

For our local businesses, this seasonal transition is more than a slowdown, it’s an opportunity. It’s a chance to create deeper relationships, showcase thoughtful service, and extend the tourism season well beyond summer.

To our business community: thank you for rising to meet the moment, adapting with purpose, and showing visitors of all ages the very best of Cody Country. Let’s continue welcoming each season—and each guest—with the same western warmth we’re known for.

Cody’s charm doesn’t fade with the summer sun—in fact, for many travelers, fall is when the magic truly begins. While summer remains the season of family vacations, packed with kids, parents, and fast-paced adventures, fall ushers in a different kind of visitor: retirees and empty-nesters seeking serenity, scenery, and slower-paced exploration.

This seasonal shift in traveler demographics presents an important opportunity for local businesses. Understanding how visitor needs and spending habits change between summer and fall can help us better serve both groups—and make the most of Cody’s extended tourism season.

Summer is high season for family travelers. They're drawn by:
- Action-packed itineraries filled with rodeos, museums, outdoor excursions, and kid-friendly attractions.
- Budget-conscious decisions, often balancing multiple meals, entry fees, and souvenirs.
- A high-energy pace, where convenience and speed are key.

As kids head back to school, Cody experiences a peaceful shift. Retirees, empty-nesters, and older couples arrive in growing numbers, taking advantage of quieter trails, fewer crowds, and crisp autumn air.

These visitors often:
- Spend more on comfort—choosing boutique lodging, fine dining, and curated experiences.
- Travel with flexibility, making spontaneous decisions and staying longer.
- Shop more thoughtfully—seeking art, handcrafted goods, books, and local specialties.
- Value personal service and a welcoming, unhurried atmosphere.

For businesses, fall is the time to:
- Showcase high-end products and unique local goods.
- Offer personalized tours or experiences at a slower pace.
- Create fall-themed specials or packages tailored to this group.
- Emphasize accessibility, hospitality, and storytelling.

Understanding this seasonal shift allows us to not only extend our visitor economy but to serve each group in ways that make them feel seen, welcomed, and valued. By adapting our offerings and marketing to meet the unique needs of families in summer and retirees in fall, we ensure Cody remains a top destination—year-round.

Let’s make the most of the changing seasons by embracing the changing faces of our visitors.

Summer may be winding down, but Cody is far from quiet.

Back-to-school means a new rhythm — morning coffee runs, after-school treats, and families adjusting to fresh routines. Local businesses shift too, offering specials, new hours, and space for locals to reconnect.

Let’s support the places that keep showing up — no matter the season. Your choices matter. Your support keeps Cody strong.

As Cody shifts from the energy of summer into the routines of back-to-school and shoulder season, it’s worth pausing to recognize what this transition really means for our community.

I just shared a new blog post about why this time of year matters so much — for our economy, our small businesses, and our long-term success as a year-round destination.
➡️ codychamber.org/blog/

Whether you’re a local business, resident, or loyal visitor, here are a few ways to support Cody during shoulder season:
✅Encourage fall travel. Share your favorite local spots and seasonal experiences with friends and family.
✅Promote fall events. From art walks to scenic drives, there’s still so much happening in Cody this time of year.
✅Shop and dine locally. Every purchase keeps our economy moving and supports the people behind the counter.
✅Tell our story. Help reshape the narrative that Cody is only a summer destination, because the heart of Cody beats year-round.

Let’s redefine shoulder season — not as a slow-down, but as a time of intentional community momentum.

As summer winds down and the golden hues of autumn begin to paint the landscape, Cody enters what many locals know as one of the most special times of year - shoulder season. While it may lack the crowds and buzz of July, this quieter season plays a vital role in the health of our economy, the sustainability of our local businesses, and the overall experience of our visitors.

In tourism, “shoulder season” refers to the transitional period between peak and off-peak times, in Cody, that means late August through October. It’s when the days are still warm, the trails are open, and wildlife is active, but the pace slows just enough to savor it all.

1. It Sustains Our Local Businesses
It’s often shoulder season that determines whether a business ends the year strong. These months help smooth out the economic highs and lows, allowing businesses to keep staff employed, manage inventory better, and prepare for winter.

2. It Offers a More Authentic Visitor Experience
For travelers, shoulder season provides a more intimate way to experience Cody. With fewer crowds, guests can linger longer at local shops, talk one-on-one with business owners, and explore the beauty of the area without the rush.

3. It Strengthens Community Resilience
When tourism dollars continue to circulate through the fall, we strengthen not only our small businesses but our local workforce and families who depend on consistent income. A strong shoulder season means a stronger, more resilient Cody.

Let’s embrace the shift from high season to heart season — and celebrate the quieter, deeper beauty that comes with it.

Experience the Soul of the West

Take a vacation in one of the last places that epitomizes the True West. Cody is what America was, a place where the cowboy culture thrives and where the new west begins. The vistas are spectacular, the land is wild, the people are genuinely friendly and the opportunities for outdoor adventure, recreation, education and entertainment are as large and varied as the Wyoming skies.

Cody Country has varied lodging opportunities, fine dining, world class museums and western activities. We are the only gateway community with two entrances to Yellowstone National Park and Cody is the hub for several loop tour drives that access five different day trips, some are scenic byways.

For exceptional Yellowstone Country travel information, including an on-line trip planner you can also visit the Cody/Yellowstone Country website at www.CodyYellowstone.org.
