WADE FLEMONS - Finding His Voice
Every great community has people whose stories reach far beyond its borders. This week's investigation takes us into American rhythm and blues—and to a Coffeyville-born musician whose career would eventually connect him to one of the most recognizable groups in music.
🔍 Upon Our Investigation...
We discovered that Wade Flemons was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1940 before spending much of his youth elsewhere. As a young musician, Flemons began building a career as a singer and songwriter and signed with Vee-Jay Records in the late 1950s.
His early recordings included “Here I Stand,” which reached the national R&B chart, followed by his biggest solo hit, “Easy Lovin’,” which reached the R&B Top 10 in 1960.
But his musical story didn't end there. Flemons later became part of The Salty Peppers, the group that evolved into Earth, Wind & Fire, and performed with the band during its early years.
