Sally Moon is April’s Community Member Spotlight, and she is representing the Colbert Historical Society, a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the history of the region. At this time, the organization has over 100 charter members.
Since relocating back to the area in the early 1990s, Sally has been an active member of the Colbert Historical Society. She has learned a lot of history and was instrumental in helping with the compiling printing, publishing, and the sales of “Colbert 1845-1982”, an interesting book detailing some of the town’s earliest days.
During her decades of service with the Historical Society, Sally has hosted groups from Colbert Schools, prepared gift baskets and refreshments for local nursing homes, and organized musical entertainment downtown, complete with snacks. The largest event hosted by the organization was Colbert’s Annual Frontier Day. Frontier Day was a great time and expanded over the years to include BBQ lunch with all the trimmings, booths and activities, and even a car show! During the 2006 Frontier Day, Sally was a member of Texoma Vintage and Classic Car Club, and the club brought about 70 antique and classic cars to display. Sally will always remember that day as a special one when Colbert’s downtown was packed with booths, cars, and people.
Outside of her Historical Society service, Sally is a member of the Highway 91 Church of Christ where she worships and attends 1st Sunday Luncheons, Ladies Day, and other activities. She has also been on the Colbert Park Board and volunteered with the Colbert Senior Citizen’s Center, where she frequents for lunch. Sally enjoys decorating and antiquing, collecting older pottery and depression glass, and she has owned small antique shoppes in Colbert and other towns.
Supporting small local business is important to Sally, and she encourages others to do the same. She enjoys the great food and service at the Farmstead and appreciates that Cuts N’ Such’s has walk-in days. Sally also enjoys the friendly service when she banks at First United and Bowles’ Station when she needs fuel. When the weather is nice, you might even see her having lunch under the Historical Society’s pavilion and picnic area by their building. The Historical Society Building downtown holds photos, plaques, and other information, and, while they don’t have regular hours, Sally and the other members would love to host anybody who is interested in a private tour.
Congratulations on being featured as April’s member spotlight!
