This is why we safari.
I’ve been to this part of the Mozambique bush three times, and only once before had I seen elephants through the brush. So when we came across this young bull, completely out in the open, mudding and bathing himself, I was absolutely beside myself.
Our guide, who is also an incredible wildlife videographer, carefully walked out of the vehicle and got within about 60 yards with his professional camera while we watched from the truck. I cannot wait to see what he captured!
We were incredibly lucky to have such a special encounter in a place where elephants can be so elusive. I was flying on cloud 9 for the rest of the day!
Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a little more luck in the days ahead.
Lions and cheetahs…we're coming for you!

A drink in your hand, an incredible African sunset in front of you, and the bush all around you. What could be better? 🍹🌅
One of my favorite nights in the Mozambique bush is when all three Zambeze Delta Safaris camps come together for an evening of cocktails, incredible sunsets, great food and even better company.
As the sun goes down, we gather in the bush with a drink in hand, enjoying local flavors, delicious finger foods and plenty of time to wander from the table to the fire, plate in hand, visiting and laughing with fellow guests.
What you don’t see in the video is just how much goes into making an evening like this happen. Every bit of food, glass, piece of cutlery and serving dish has to be brought into the bush—and there is no single-use dinnerware. Everything is reusable and eco-conscious, which makes the effort behind the scenes pretty remarkable.
We get to simply arrive, take in that sunset, enjoy a cocktail, eat some seriously delicious food and soak up the evening.
Knowing how much work goes into creating these experiences makes me appreciate them even more.
Authentic. Delicious. Memorable. And always one of the most fun nights in Mozambique.

As the sun drops over the Mozambique bush, the landscape seems to catch fire—golden grass, long shadows and silhouettes of acacia trees stretching across the horizon. Add the sounds of the bush around you, and you have one of those quintessential African moments. It’s the kind of moment that makes you understand why people fall in love with Africa—and why, once you’ve been, you start dreaming about your return.

A typical day in the Zambeze Delta.

And somehow, there is no such thing as a typical day here.

The morning starts cold enough for layers, coffee and a fire. Then we climb into the safari truck, unplugged from the rest of the world, with no agenda other than finding animals.

And there is always something to find.
Herds of African antelope moving through the bush. Warthogs disappearing into the grass. The little moments and unexpected sightings that you would never notice if you weren't looking closely.

Elephants and lions can be harder to find in this vast wilderness, which makes seeing one feel even more special when you do.

But somewhere between the wildlife and the miles of untouched bush, the conversations change.

You talk about memories with your kids. You listen to your adult children laughing in the back of the truck.
You hear them say this is their favorite place in the world—and realize just how incredibly blessed you are to be here together.

By afternoon, the layers are gone and we're in shorts and short sleeves, watching the bush come alive in a completely different way.

Then the sun begins to set, the temperature drops, and we find ourselves gathered around the fire, talking long after dark.

This place is especially meaningful to me. My mom adored her time here. Through the Cabela Family Foundation, we have been fortunate to continue my parents' legacy through a collaboration with Zambeze Delta Safaris, supporting conservation projects that are helping repopulate this wilderness with lions and cheetahs.

So yes, we come for the wildlife. But Africa gives you something much bigger.
It reminds you how extraordinary this world is—and how very small you are within it.
It reminds you what matters —
Family. Time. Wild places. Being present.

Africa changes you. And maybe that's why, every time I leave, a part of me is already wondering when I can come back.

Getting to Zambeze Delta Coutada 11 is part of the adventure.

The only way into camp is by helicopter, and from the moment we lifted off, the views were incredible. Flying over Mozambique’s untouched wilderness, winding rivers, and endless floodplains gave us a perspective you simply can’t get from the ground.

Our pilot, Dustin, made the flight even more memorable by taking us through a dramatic bend in the river before we landed at camp.

Not many safari destinations begin with an arrival like this.

Back at Zambeze Delta in Mozambique, one of my favorite places in Africa.

What I love most about this camp is that it strikes the perfect balance between authentic safari and understated luxury. Spacious tented accommodations, exceptional hospitality, wonderful meals, and the kind of peaceful surroundings that remind you how special it is to truly disconnect.

This visit is even more meaningful because I get to see my son, Holden, again. He’s been here since June, and it’s been incredible watching him pursue his passion in one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Africa.

I’m looking forward to sharing this adventure with you over the coming days.

Travel doesn’t always go as planned.

Instead of visiting the Royal Palace and Killing Fields, my Aunt Rita’s painful knee meant an unexpected trip to the hospital. Thankfully, our incredible AmaWaterways Cruise Director was with us every step of the way, making a stressful situation so much easier.

The next day, he stayed by our side at the beautiful Vipassana Dhurak Buddhist Centre, helping Rita navigate the many stairs so she could still experience the peaceful Buddhist blessing ceremony.

The sights were unforgettable, but the care and kindness we received made an even greater impression. Sometimes the best part of travel is the people who help you through the unexpected.

Trae Su Forest & Sanctuary

Tra Su Forest was one of the highlights of our AMA Waterways Mekong River cruise.

Drifting quietly through the forest by traditional sampan, surrounded by floating lily pads with pink blooms, lush greenery, and the sounds of nature all around us, was such a special way to experience this part of Vietnam. Our rower worked with such strength and grace, guiding us through the waterways while sharing the traditional Vietnamese conical hats that made the moment even more memorable.

The bright sun made capturing the incredible birdlife a challenge, but honestly, some experiences are meant to be enjoyed more than photographed. The motorboat ride back gave us another beautiful perspective of the forest, making this an excursion I would highly recommend to my clients looking for a truly authentic Mekong experience.
