Caldwell Parish Tourism Commission Welcome to
CALDWELL PARISH

On March 6, 1838, the State of Louisiana created the Parish of Caldwell from lands formerly in Catahoula and Ouachita parishes.

During that year the Town of Columbia was designated the parish seat, a public square donated and a log jail and courthouse erected on this square. Sometimes known as the Gem of the Ouachita, vintage tales are told—some true, some not and some well you decide. The Four corners of the parish—Copenhagen to Kelly—Boeuf to Beaucoup and all points in between provide a variety of attractions sure to p

eak the curiosity and interests of diverse travelers. A drive through the parish provides a host of shops, relaxed dining,, B&Bs and outdoor recreation like no place else. The Last Hanging—Louisiana’s last ex*****on by hanging was conducted in the Courthouse. A documentary film was produced on this event and efforts are in progress to open the “hanging loft” for tours, Our major industries—Farming and Timber provide educational and entertaining tours to the passing through or overnight visitor. Always entertaining and reservations never needed are the men and their flying machines who fly through the air with the greatest of ease during seasonal dusting of corn, cotton, soybeans and timber.

TOURIST COMMISSION WILL FOCUS ON AGRITOURISM

According to RS 9:2795.5 Agritourism means the travel or visit by the general public to, or the practice of inviting the general public to travel to or visit, a working farm, ranch or other commercial agricultural, aquacultural, horticultural or forestry operation for the purpose of enjoyment, education or participation in the activities of the farm, ranch, or other agricultural, aquacultural, horticultural or forestry operation. Agritourism Activities provide farmers and property owners, who qualify, with opportunities to earn income off the farm/property to sustain their farming pursuits.

In 2008, the Louisiana Legislature expanded the limitation of liability found in La. RS. 9:2795.5 Louisiana's Agritourism Limited Liability Law. To become a certified agritourism operator, one must seek protection according to the guidelines found in La R.S. 9:2795.5, the limited liability agritourism law passed in 2008.

The Caldwell Parish Tourist Commission will focus on Agritourism Activities that can be developed in “Making Caldwell Parish A Tourist Destination”. A list of agritourism activities can be found in AGRITOURISM RULES – La. R.S. 9:2795.5. The list includes Agricultural crafts, tours and visits; educational tours and visits; equine activity; farm animal activity; garden/nursery tours and visits; horseback and pony riding.
