The river shares its name with the Scuppernong grapes native to the area. Each October, Tyrrell County hosts an annual Scuppernong River Festival, a local tradition since 1991. e Parks System established the Scuppernong River Section of Pettigrew State Park, along the banks of the river, with the aid of the The Nature Conservancy.

The Partnership for the Sounds has begun their annual offering of the FREE River Roaming Vineyard Voyages to the Vineyards on the Scuppernong winery every Thursday at 11 am. The Vineyard Voyages are Free of Charge, but reservations are required and seating on the boat is limited. Call 252-796-1000 for reservations.
