Check out the amazing work that led to the reopening of US 178 (North Road) in Orangeburg County! After the road was washed out during a flood last November, crews installed large concrete culvert pipes to allow enhanced drainage underneath the road.

Heavy equipment graded and compacted the soil to form a stable, long-lasting roadbed using a single drum roller. With improved drainage, the roadway is more resilient against future storms.

🚗 Traffic Update for Blythewood Area, Expect Delays ⏱️

Roadwork is ramping up in Northeast Richland as part of Richland County’s Transportation Penny Program, including upgrades to Blythewood Road and surrounding areas. With SCDOT improvements also underway and added traffic from Scout Motors construction, drivers should consider alternate routes to avoid delays.

Motorists who use Blythewood Road in Northeast Richland should use caution because of ongoing road and highway projects. Following are Transportation Penny upgrades scheduled for the area:

- Crews have begun work to relocate the exit road of University Parkway for the Cobblestone Park gated community near Blythewood Road. This work will continue through Aug. 27. Other detail work on the perimeter of the Blythewood Road roundabout will continue through September.
- Around Friday, Aug. 15, crews will begin paving the center of the roundabout at the entrance of Cobblestone Park, shifting traffic. This work will continue through the end of August.
- From Sept. 14 to Oct. 1, crews will install concrete islands on Community Road.
- Ongoing work to widen the north end of Blythewood Road, including storm drain and drainage structure upgrades, and final paving work are set for completion at the end of September.

Because of other road upgrades in the area by the SC Department of Transportation and an increase in contractor traffic related to new construction at Scout Motors, motorists are advised to use alternative routes to lessen congestion and drivetime.

SCDOT crews in Lexington County recently trimmed overhanging limbs on Axtell Drive as part of storm prep. Using a method called limb rigging, they safely lower branches to avoid damaging power lines, roads, or structures.

Overhanging limbs may seem harmless, but during high winds or heavy rain, they can fall and:
🚫 Block roads
🚫 Take down power lines
🚫 Delay emergency responders

By clearing these potential hazards before the storm, we help keep roads open, power on, and communities safe.

Crews recently completed an inspection of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston. Using specialized cranes, they accessed the high cables and hard-to-reach structural components beneath the bridge.

Inspectors check for damage, corrosion, and signs of wear to ensure the bridge remains safe and strong. Keeping our infrastructure in top condition is a top priority for everyone who depends on it.

🚧 Safety Spotlight: New Speed Trailers in Work Zones 🚨

Speeding through work zones puts both drivers and roadway workers at serious risk and it's a problem our partners at South Carolina Department of Public Safety are tackling head-on.

To help reduce speeding and improve safety, 22 new speed trailers have been deployed in work zones across South Carolina, including the Upstate, Midlands, Lowcountry, and Grand Strand.

These trailers:
🔹 Flash blue lights and a “SLOW DOWN” message when speeding is detected
🔹 Share emergency alerts during road closures, hurricanes, or crashes
🔹 Collect traffic data to support future enforcement and planning

While the trailers don’t issue tickets, they serve as a powerful reminder to drive responsibly — especially in work zones.

SCDOT is proud to partner with SCDPS on this important initiative. Let’s work together to protect those improving our roads.

👷Respect the zone. Slow down. So we can all get home. 🛣
