Many pilgrims consider Santiago the end of their Camino. But some choose to continue on to Finisterre, or as some call it... the end of the earth.

It sits about 90 km west of the cathedral, three or four days on foot, on a cape that drops straight into the Atlantic. The Romans named it finis terrae because, as far as they knew, the world simply stopped here. Long before any of them arrived, people were already climbing these cliffs to watch the sun disappear into the sea.

Medieval pilgrims kept walking past Santiago to reach it. Once they arrived, they washed in the ocean, picked up a scallop shell from the beach, and burned the clothes and boots that had carried them across Spain. Fires on the cape are banned now, so a bronze boot sits on the rocks in their place.

The town has its own devotion too. In the church of Santa María das Areas hangs the Santo Cristo de Fisterra, a crucifix that by local tradition was saved from a ship caught in a storm off this coast. Pilgrims stop to pray there on the way out to the lighthouse.

At the very end of the path stands one last stone marker. It reads Km 0,000.

In 1917, three shepherd children from a hamlet outside Fátima said a lady brighter than the sun had appeared to them while they were out with their sheep. Lúcia was ten. Her cousins Francisco and Jacinta were nine and seven.

She returned on the 13th of every month from May to October. In August the local administrator locked the children up to make them take it back, and they missed the date. Six days later she met them at Valinhos, a short walk from home.

On October 13, tens of thousands of people stood in the rain at the Cova da Iria and watched the sun move. Next Tuesday marks 109 years.

Most visitors see the basilica and stop there. Walk about 2 km out to Aljustrel and the story gets smaller and closer. Plain stone houses. Narrow beds. Francisco died in one of those rooms in 1919, and Jacinta the following year. In 2017 they became the youngest non-martyrs the Church has ever canonized.

The 24 stone figures around this gate are older than the gate itself.

They were carved for Master Mateo’s stone choir inside the cathedral in the 1100s and moved out to the Praza da Quintana in the 1600s, where they’ve stood guard over the Holy Door ever since.

Most years, pilgrims walk right past it.

In 2027 the Feast of St. James falls on a Sunday, which makes it a Jacobean Holy Year. Pilgrims who pass through the Holy Door, go to confession, receive Communion and pray for the Pope’s intentions may receive a plenary indulgence.

There’s a phrase you’ll hear on the Camino within your first few days: the Camino provides.

At first it sounds like something printed on a souvenir. Then it starts happening.

A stranger at breakfast turns out to be walking your exact pace for the next hundred kilometers. A tiny village church you almost walked past is open, candles lit, just as the bells ring for Mass. The rain holds off until the moment you step inside. Someone shares their bread and cheese at a stone wall and by Santiago they feel like family.

None of it is planned, and all of it feels like it was meant for you.

That’s the quiet magic of pilgrimage. You set out with a backpack and a route, and somewhere along the Way you realize you’re being cared for.

The bartender in Portomarín keeps his stamp next to the espresso machine. The priest in a village church might pull his out of a drawer in the sacristy. Some albergues have three to choose from.

Each one goes into your credencial, the pilgrim credential you carry from your first day of walking. It grew out of the letters medieval pilgrims carried from their bishop or parish priest, proof to towns and monasteries that they were on the road to St. James and could be trusted with a bed and a meal.

The idea hasn't changed much. Over the last 100 km you need at least two stamps a day, and at the Pilgrim Office in Santiago, those pages are how your Compostela is earned.

What pilgrims don't expect is how much the book comes to mean. Weeks later you flip through it and every stamp brings back a place. The café where the rain finally stopped. The church where you sat a little longer than you planned.
