Just minutes from I-79 in Bridgeport, West Virginia, the restored Simpson Creek Covered Bridge offers an easy stop into Harrison County history. Built in 1881, rebuilt after a 1899 flood, and later moved to Holen Mill, the bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and restored in 2002.

Heavy rains had just passed when I photographed the Shaeffer Campbell Covered Bridge in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Built in 1891, the Kingpost truss once crossed Clear Creek in Fairfield County before being condemned after a tractor fell through its floor in 1973. Today, it rests on the Ohio University Belmont Campus, spanning a quiet pond.

Tucked along a quiet rural road north of Cambridge, Ohio, the Indian Camp Covered Bridge is one of Guernsey County’s surviving historic covered bridges. Built in 1855, the restored multiple Kingpost truss still carries local traffic over Indian Camp Creek, offering a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring Ohio’s covered bridges and backroad history.

Cambridge City Park in Cambridge, Ohio, is home to the Armstrong Covered Bridge, also known as the Clio Covered Bridge, a restored 1849 multiple Kingpost truss that originally crossed Salt Creek near Clio. The historic covered bridge survived Morgan’s Raid during the Civil War and was moved to the park in 1966 during the development of Salt Fork State Park.

Ohio’s historic S bridges are among the most distinctive surviving features of the National Road in eastern Ohio. Built as durable stone arch crossings over streams in Muskingum and Guernsey counties, their curved approaches reflected both practical engineering and the demands of early overland travel.

Every year, a group of photographer friends and I choose a destination and meet up. Life has changed for many of us; some have married, gotten engaged, or gone through other major life events, but we still find a way to come together.

This year, we chose the New River Gorge, and our only destination today was Fern Creek. It is not an easy trail. The route requires multiple ladders, bushwhacking, and a descent of roughly 1,000 feet. Although it is only about two miles one way, it took us six hours as we stopped often to photograph the landscape.

It was good to finally check this one off my bucket list.

Travelers following the National Road through eastern Ohio should make time for a stop at the Y Bridge in downtown Zanesville. Few crossings in the country are as distinctive, and fewer still are tied so closely to the early movement of people, goods, and roads across the interior. At the meeting of the Licking and Muskingum rivers, the bridge remains both a landmark and a working part of U.S. Route 40, offering a direct connection to one of the most unusual pieces of transportation history along the old road.

In 1871, a project was adopted to improve the Cheboygan, Michigan, Harbor by dredging the river to a width of 200 feet, and, to help mariners locate the entrance, a light was later established and aligned with the west side of the river mouth. The Cheboygan Crib Lighthouse commenced operation in 1884, effectively serving as the outer marker from Lake Huron while the front and rear range lights carried vessels inward on the proper line.

The Michigan City lighthouses mark one of the most distinctive harbor entrances on the southern shore of Lake Michigan in . Together, the old shore light and the later pierhead light reflected the city’s growth as a working port, while their survival into the present gave Indiana one of its best-known maritime landmarks.

In 2016, after a fresh snowfall settled across Michigan’s lower peninsula, I followed US 23 north along Lake Huron to visit a series of historic lights. From the restored 1906 truss in Bridgeport to Sturgeon Point, Presque Isle, and Forty Mile Point, each stop stood quiet against the winter shoreline. These beacons once marked reefs, harbors of refuge, and shipping corridors that shaped the region’s development. In the stillness of snow and lake, their histories felt close at hand.
