Four women in Columbus, Mississippi remembered fallen soldiers from both sides a year after the Civil War ended. Thank you Good Grit Magazine for a great article!

They carried flowers.

Armfuls of them. In places like Columbus, Mississippi, women began a quiet ritual, honoring the fallen not by side, but by sacrifice.

Today looks different, but the meaning hasn’t changed.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember what the day is for.

Friendship Cemetary in Columbus, MS is the final resting place for veterans of every American war, including the Civil War. In 1866, Friendship Cemetary held the first Decoration Day ceremony, which later inspired the creation of Memorial Day as we know it today.
