The things you see from my desk...
This morning when I pulled into work, I saw an ambulance sitting in the lot across the street. It appeared to be waiting to pull onto the highway, but despite a break in traffic it didn't leave. I didn't question too much, what do I know about the operations of ambulances? A few minutes later sitting at my desk I notice traffic stopped by said ambulance and dozens of motorcycles began making their way through the busy intersection at 81 Hwy and 6th Street (9 Hwy). Upon closer inspection (some may call gawking) I realized they were American Legion Riders.
I was unprepared for their trip past my window and didn't get a picture, but if you know this office, we have a lot of connections, and Michelle's mom is the go-to for her Legion questions.
The American Legion Riders began their Legacy Run this morning in Salina (of which we provided welcome bags earlier this week). They made their way through Concordia and stopped at the American Legion Post 76. They have a 3-day run traveling over 575 miles, stopping at 7 American Legion Posts and laying 6 wreaths. They'll visit Fort Riley, Kansas Veterans Cemetary, visit with residents at the VA Hospital, and lay a wreath at Leavenworth National Cemetary along their journey. Michelle's mom, Lisa Valcoure, snapped a couple quick photos for your enjoyment. Safe travels to all of the riders.
Since its inception in 2006, The American Legion Legacy Run has raised $16 million dollars for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. These funds have provided over $6.2 million dollars in scholarships to support the higher education of children who lost a parent in active military service on or after September 11, 2001, or whose post-9/11 parent has a VA disability rating of 50% or higher.
