✨ Join us for Las Posadas! ✨ A cherished, multi-day Advent tradition reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for lodging in Bethlehem, featuring processions with candles, singing (in Spanish and English), prayers, luminaries, bonfires, traditional foods like biscochitos, red chile, beans and chicos and tamales, and community gatherings.
Major elements of the tradition:
The Procession: Led by an angel and a figure representing Mary on a donkey, participants (often children in robes) carry candles and statues, going door-to-door asking for posada (lodging).
The Rejection & Acceptance: At each home, they are initially turned away, singing traditional verses, until finally welcomed into a home or stable for celebration.
The Celebration: The "inn" hosts a party with prayers, music (hymns and carols), bonfire, and festive foods like tamales, buñuelos, and warm drinks (hot chocolate, ponche, atole). It’s a potluck celebration, bring a dish to share.
Community & History: Rooted in Spanish Catholic tradition, it's a powerful community event, particularly strong in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico- often using farolitos (lanterns) to light the way.
