This Costa Rica adventure sounds like an absolute dream:
"Excellent and amazing trip to Costa Rica!
Our stay at Volcano Lodge was wonderful, we loved the hot springs. Enjoyed several excursions, including the Jungle Float Safari, which was fun, and the Hanging Bridges with a great guide — recommend this! We drove to La Fortuna Waterfalls. There are 500 steps to the waterfall pool at the bottom, or you can see the falls from the viewing area — recommend this too!
For the next half of our trip, we drove to the Manuel Antonio area through lots of narrow roads. Our stay at Shana by the Sea was wonderful — great place and staff. It is about 60 steps/stairs to the ocean. We enjoyed excursions here too and would recommend all of them. Birdwatching was great, had a lovely swim on a Catamaran, and then saw a momma and baby whale and dolphins on the Tall Sails with fresh red snapper for dinner.
I'd recommend using transportation services rather than renting a vehicle.
