Why did the British call Francis Marion the "Swamp Fox"?

Because they could not hold him.

In 1780, the South had all but fallen. Charleston was captured. The Continental Army in the region was shattered at Camden. To the British command, South Carolina was a conquered province — pacified, finished, done.

Then a small, quiet man began striking from the swamps.

Francis Marion led a band of irregulars — sometimes only a few dozen men, poorly armed, unpaid, supplying themselves. They would ambush a supply column or a patrol at dusk, then vanish into the flooded lowcountry the redcoats did not know and could not follow. By the time British cavalry arrived, there was nothing to chase but Spanish moss and black water.

He wore down the Crown's grip on the backcountry one raid at a time — cutting supply lines, freeing prisoners, and keeping the idea of resistance alive when the war in the South looked lost.

The British sent their finest to end him. They branded him a traitor. They hunted him through the wetlands.

They never took him.

We come from people who could not be caught.
