Yearly PSA!!
It is time for fawns to arrive!! If you are lucky enough to find one, please leave it alone unless it is in immediate danger (like "hiding" in the road). It is completely normal for doe to leave their fawns for hours at a time. They are born with almost no scent, and are not strong enough to run from predators for the first couple weeks. During this time they stay hidden, laying where they feel safe. If they are curled up, quiet, alert, and appear clean they are fine and mom is very likely nearby.
Contact the game commission if you find a fawn with obvious injuries, wondering around crying, or covered in maggots with strong odor present. The tips of their ears sometimes curl when they are dehydrated too.
Pictured is a fawn I found on my hike today, doing exactly what its supposed to. Hiding, freezing, but alert to my presence. I took this picture and moved on to avoid stressing it or mom.
