Nobody has ever successfully completed a fall family itinerary exactly as planned. That's fine. The itinerary was always aspirational anyway. 🍁

Our personally tested guide breaks fall around Cooperstown down by age - because the activity that makes a toddler lose their mind with joy and the activity that gets a teenager to voluntarily put the phone down are not the same activity.

Toddlers → ducks, pumpkins, a carousel, zero expectations.
Elementary → corn mazes, train rides, a bat being made in front of them, several loud opinions about tractors.
Tweens & teens → delighted by almost nothing, maybe ghost tours by lantern, goat yoga on a 125-acre farm, kayaks or a blacksmith shop though.

Everyone: donuts.

You’ve seen it. You know it’s one of Cooperstown’s iconic landmarks: this 60-foot stone castle on Otsego Lake was supposedly built for no reason at all. And it turned 150 years old this Fall.

The history is part fact, part folklore - but the short version goes like this: in 1876, the co-founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company hired a 29-year-old architect to build a miniature medieval castle on the lakeshore. That architect went on to design the Dakota and the Plaza Hotels in NYC. The castle? It just sat there. For 150 years.

Some say it was a jobs program during the Panic of 1873. Some say it was pure vanity. Either way, Kingfisher Tower found its purpose a long time ago, it's been wowing visitors and residents on Otsego Lake since before any of us were born.

This year it turns 150, and we dug into the full story - reason behind its construction by the family that gave Cooperstown the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the original 1876 newspaper article that described the tower for the first time.
