Monday Musing: Beyond the Sandals Commercials
We’ve all seen the Sandals commercials. Turquoise water, white sand, beautiful pools, gorgeous rooms, and smiling couples. You may even have seen a car driving around, completely wrapped in a Sandals ad.
Sandals certainly knows how to get our attention.
But after spending four nights at Sandals Saint Vincent, I realized that what impressed me most had very little to do with the glossy advertising.
First, there is Saint Vincent itself.
This is not your typical Caribbean island. It is lush and mountainous, and still feels wonderfully unspoiled. The resort is tucked between the mountains and the sea, and there were moments when it truly felt as though we had discovered a secret paradise.
The beach is relatively small, with soft white sand and beautifully calm water. My husband is not really an “ocean person,” but somehow he ended up happily bobbing around in the water for hours every day. That alone tells you something about this place!
There is also so much included that you can make your days as active or as inactive as you like. Paddleboarding, snorkeling, kayaking, tubing, and more.
One of my favorite things was watching what I started calling the “shiny wedding band crowd,” the honeymooners, squealing with delight as they bounced across the water on the tube. It was impossible not to smile watching them.
And then there was the spa.
We treated ourselves to a wonderful riverside massage and followed it with an hour or so moving from the sauna to the cold plunge, then the hot plunge, before finally drifting around the spa pool. The spa pools, plunges, and sauna are complimentary for resort guests, and during our stay they were blissfully uncrowded.
But as wonderful as all of that was, none of it is what really set this experience apart.
It was the people.
Katie, who took care of our room each day. Bertram, who greeted us at breakfast every morning. And so many others whose names I wish I had written down.
We heard about grandchildren. We heard about morning conversations with a father. We talked about families, plans for the day, and everyday life.
These weren’t scripted resort interactions. They were genuine conversations.
After only four days, it began to feel less like staying at an all-inclusive and more like visiting favorite relatives who just happen to live in one of the most beautiful places imaginable.
And that warmth seemed to carry over to the guests. People greeted one another on the beach and along the walkways. Strangers stopped to chat. There was simply a feeling of joy throughout the resort. Even the craziness of our return airport experience couldn't diminish the memory of the smiles.
Sandals is very good at advertising. They know how to show us the beaches, the pools, the romantic dinners, and those beautiful suites.
But it’s what happens beyond the glossy ads that makes the difference.
The genuine hospitality. The people who remember you. The conversations. The feeling that someone is truly happy you are there.
That is where Sandals really knows how to do it right.
And something else worth knowing: every Sandals has its own personality.
The setting, beaches, atmosphere, activities, and overall feel can vary greatly from one resort to another. The perfect Sandals for honeymooners may not be the same as the one we recommend for an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or two people who want to disappear somewhere beautiful for a few days.
Choosing a Sandals or any All-Inclusive isn’t just about choosing a resort. It’s about choosing the right resort for you.
