Sad news from our friends and fellow stewards of our animal friends.
Sad part of working with these beautiful animals.
My sincerest condolences, Meg, and all of the dedicated staff @ CWHF who work tirelessly to limit the frequency of situations such as this unfortunate, yet unavoidable example.
We all love the work you guys do, and we will honor the memory of Cali.

We have some very sad news to share. Cali's vet appointment yesterday didn't turn out as we expected. After conducting an ultrasound of her shoulder and doing x-rays, we discovered that her shoulder was broken and dislocated.
Our vet consulted with surgeons at NC State, but they advised that there has never been a case of a successful surgery for an injury like Cali's. The bone in that area will not hold screws, and even if they were able to repair the break during surgery the chances of it remaining stable during recovery were slim to none. Without surgery, there was a high chance the dislocated bone would eventually puncture her skin.
While we would have gone to great lengths to repair Cali's shoulder if our veterinary team recommended it, they did not and so we chose to humanely end her suffering last night. It's a devastating loss for the herd, for all of you who were rooting for her recovery, and for those of us who had been taking care of Cali over the past few days. But at least she didn't suffer alone in the wild, and she was safe and comfortable for the last week of her life. She was buried on our farm in a sunny spot in the woods, next to Roamer.

Thank you all for your kind support over the last few days. Cali knew she was loved - we told her there were so many people out there wishing her the best, and all of that good energy definitely enriched her life while she was with us.
Rest free and easy, sweet Cali.
