Utopia Family Friendly 8BR Vacation Paradise, Just Steps to Beach, Private Pool, Hot Tub, Magnificent Ocean It was always a vacation to remember.

You will not regret choosing the Outer Banks as a vacation spot for your family and friends! The beaches are gorgeous and wide; renting Utopia just steps from the waves is sure to become an annual tradition. The four wheel drive beach requires a 4x4 vehicle and you will find the privacy and relaxed pace just perfect to recharge your soul. We are located on one of the wild horses’ favorite grazing

path so you should have some nice photo opportunities right from our deck. We have over 10 year’s experience choosing the Outer Banks for our personal yearly vacation retreat. We often arrived with a group of friends and a herd of kids, or our extended family for a reunion. Over the years, we have compiled some of our favorite attractions; we will pass on our experience to you, our (busy) guests, to save you so much planning time. It truly is steps over the dune to the waves any time of the day or evening Do you know about our ghost crabs? Great fun for kids with a flashlight! Does it seem like there is never enough time to sit down and play a board game anymore? We are more than ready for that vacation moment with the 20+ games and puzzles to entertain young and old alike. We also have a large paperback library, so you can bury your nose in a book while relaxing by the pool or burying your toes in the sand. We are new owners of this property and have made many updates since October : 9 new reclining leather seats for the theater room as well as an upgraded surround sound system, new flooring on all 3 levels, new paint on the walls, tons of beachy décor, and general updates all around. We know your stay at our beach house will be one you will want to repeat time and again. We fell in love with Corolla over 14 years ago and now that the kids are grown and out of the house, those are memories and photographs that are just absolutely priceless. Feel free to call or e-mail with any questions you may have. Book today and make your Carolina vacation in beach paradise a reality! Thank you, Tom and Andrea Harris

Please be careful driving on the beach. Turtles are nesting!

We’ve been getting a ton of calls about two year old mare Alma - hopefully this post will help answer some questions and spread the word about what everyone can do to help us ensure she stays safe, healthy, and wild.

Of particular note, as you can see from the photo Alma has wounds on both sides of her face, probably from being bit. Our vet has been consulted and has advised that they are clean and healing well, and not anything to be too worried about. We will continue to remain in close contact with our vet but there is no reason at this point to be concerned for Alma’s physical well-being.

Earlier this spring, Alma was pushed out of the harem she born into. The stallion (who is most likely her father, but DNA will confirm) became aggressive towards her and would not let her get close to the rest of the mares. Alma is often alone on the beach and to human observers seems lost, which is understandably concerning. It may be difficult to see, but we have to remember that these are wild horses behaving naturally. It’s what eventually happens to each and every young horse, though Alma’s situation is a little unique.

Alma’s family lives in an area with a low population of horses - it’s just them for over a mile. Normally, a mare that’s pushed out of her harem would quickly be scooped up by another stallion but there just aren’t any other harems close by for Alma to assimilate into. The good news is she finally seems to be migrating north, towards more densely populated areas. We are keeping our fingers crossed that she comes across a welcoming group soon.

What we are most concerned about is the fact that Alma seems to be getting increasingly habituated. She’s been approaching and following people, and is getting very close to vehicles. We are asking that all visitors please do everything possible to discourage this behavior if you happen to encounter Alma. Get into your vehicle, wave your arms around to scare her away from you, and definitely do not pet her or give her any positive attention at all. We want Alma to be completely disinterested in humans - afraid of them, even. She is in a very vulnerable position right now, where she is young, impressionable, and unfortunately alone. We want her to be seeking out the company of other horses, not people.

As we head into another busy turnover weekend, please do us a favor if you are coming to the 4x4 and help us keep Alma wild. Her genes are invaluable to the herd and her removal due to habituation would be a devastating blow. We can’t afford to lose another young horse from the wild. Alma is healthy and in excellent physical shape, she just needs some time to mature and figure out how to be a grownup horse. If we’re going to share space with these horses and expect them to remain wild, we all have to be active participants in their management. Please give her plenty of space and help us ensure she stays wild and free for the rest of her life.

Even more reason to plan your arrival at LOW tide: There is a large area in Carova roped off at this time for turtle nesting so there is less space to drive.

Stay up-to-date on the status of active sea turtle nests up and down the beaches of the Northern Outer Banks from Corolla to S. Nags Head.

Please remember to stay at least 50 feet or further away from the Corolla wild horses at all times, and only admire them from afar. Please respect their space and give them room... It is for their safety as well as ours. Please also do not feed, lure, or entice these precious animals as these acts are all dangerous and against the law. We are so thankful that the Corolla wild horses live and roam free here on our beach... They are our treasures and your help is greatly appreciated to keep them WILD and free. If you see cruelty or laws being broken, please call the Currituck County Sheriff at 252-453-8204 or the Corolla Wild Horse Fund at 252-453-8002. Stay safe out there! Thank you very much! 🥰

As we head into a weekend that’s shaping up to be beautiful and busy, please remember to give the horses plenty of space. Over the last couple weeks we have really seen an increase in dangerous behavior from visitors to the 4x4. The rules are in place to keep you and the horses safe. The law states that you must stay 50ft away at all times, and if one of our staff tells you that you should move it’s because we are trying to keep you out of harms way. Stallions are fighting and unpredictable; if you are in their path you could get hurt and we are trying to prevent that from happening. Our staff knows the herd dynamics and can interpret behavior, and may see things that you do not. Please trust that we are not trying to ruin your moment or your photograph - quite the opposite! We want you to have a wonderful visit and see the horses safely in their natural habitat.

A good reminder

It's April 1 and we can't help but think about sweet Rabbit, who would have been 3 years old this month. Rabbit was tragically hit and killed on the beach on New Year's Day. It was truly an accident; the driver was devastated and law enforcement found no evidence of intoxication or dangerous driving, but nevertheless we lost a young mare from the herd and that loss will be felt for generations. As another busy tourist season kicks off, we are asking everyone who plans on visiting the northern beaches to review the laws and regulations that are in place to keep everyone safe.

Air down your tires, slow down, and keep an eye on your surroundings. Horses can gallop over the dunes in a split second. Children and dogs can dart out around parked trucks. The condition of the beach can change drastically from one minute to the next. Irresponsible driving can not only cause a terrible accident, it also damages the beach and makes driving difficult for everyone. And please stay off the dunes! This goes for climbing them on foot as well as driving on them.

If you are driving on the sand roads behind the dunes, please do not stop and get out of your vehicle to get closer to the horses. It's likely that wherever you go, you will be trespassing. It's also very dangerous, not to mention the fact that approaching or harassing the horses is illegal. Bring a camera with a zoom lens and enjoy watching the horses behave naturally.

Please be considerate and informed if you are planning on driving on the 4x4 beach. Your actions have long-lasting consequences. Err on the side of caution and be overly careful - slow down and take in the natural beauty of this amazing place!
