PSA: As this weekend marks the beginning of summer, CMS with our partner North Carolina Sea Grant provides guidance on breaking the "Grip of the Rip!" Know your options! 80% of all surf rescues are related to rip currents.
Options:
1) Relax, rip currents will not pull you under
2) Don't fight the current
3) Escape by swimming parallel to shore (sideways)
4) Float or tread water, the grip will release you
5) Pay attention to RED flags that warn of Rip Currents

Exciting news!!!
N.E.S.T. has just installed signs on the Carova and Swan beaches in Currituck County. The signs encourage drivers to lookout for sea turtles and the volunteers who help protect them. Both are often on the beach at night, so it’s especially important for drivers to be aware.
Thanks to the great team of N.E.S.T. volunteers who made this happen!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!
Please do not have your dog on the sand after 10:00 or before 6:00. This is for the dog’s safety. The sand can reach temperatures in excess of 150 degrees during those hours over the weekend. A dog has no defense for this. Simply having water for them will not be enough.

I saw a family out having fun in the middle of the day yesterday with their dog tied to a stale set in the sand. No water, no blanket, and it was too hot for the pup to even lay down.

Don’t do that.

Do not leave your dog in the car, even with the windows down.
