North Carolina’s Wild Horses of the Outer Banks Road Trip takes you to visit some of the most unforgettable coastal places in the state, where wild horses still wander beaches, dunes, marshes, and windswept barrier islands:

📍Rachel Carson Reserve

Up along the northern Outer Banks, the Carova and Corolla horses are the stars of the sand, often seen moving through the beach grass, walking near the shoreline, or roaming the 4x4 beaches where paved roads end. Farther south, Ocracoke Island is home to the Ocracoke Banker Ponies, a protected herd kept in a sound-side enclosure along NC 12, on an island that can only be reached by ferry, private boat, or air. Down near Beaufort, the Rachel Carson Reserve gives you a completely different view, with horses grazing across marshy islands like Carrot Island and Town Marsh. From there, Shackleford Banks offers one of the wildest settings of all, with more than 100 horses living on the southernmost barrier island of Cape Lookout National Seashore, often seen with dunes, open beach, and Cape Lookout Lighthouse in the distance. Together, these herds carry centuries of coastal history, tied to the hardy Banker horses believed to descend from Spanish stock that arrived along the Carolina coast long ago.
