Mesa Verde Country, Colorado

Mesa Verde Country, Colorado Breathtaking scenic beauty, spectacular National Parks and Monuments, and cultural and historic treasures await you in Mesa Verde Country.

Known as the Archaeological Center of America, the region known as Mesa Verde Country is home to Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, the Anasazi Heritage Center, Crow Canyon Archaeology Center, and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, all located in Montezuma County, which is also home to the towns of Dolores, Mancos, and Towaoc; and the City of Cortez. Beyond archaeology

this area is proud to be one of the largest agricultural communities in the State. Dolores boasts outstanding outdoor opportunities with McPhee Reservoir – the second largest lake in Colorado, boating and fishing in the Gold Medal waters of the Dolores River, and world-class mountain biking. The town of Mancos is a thriving art community with 2 art co-ops for the many artists working in a variety of media, including nationally recognized bronze artist Veryl Goodnight. Mancos also hosts a wildly popular Balloon Festival in September. The City of Cortez features over 300 acres of parks, trails, natural areas and preserves. The 160 acre, USGA sanctioned Conquistador Golf Course features stunning panoramic views of the LaPlata Mountains, Mesa Verde and Sleeping Ute Mountain. The historic downtown area, with shops, galleries and trading posts, also offers many excellent restaurants that feature our local produce, micro-brews and wines. The Cortez Cultural Center hosts traditional Native American dances in the plaza downtown six nights per week in the summer. This is a free event that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in Towaoc is home to a large resort and casino, working farm and ranch, a pottery store where visitors can watch tribal artists making authentic wares, a large travel center, and the Ute Mountain Tribal Park, often referred to as the “second Mesa Verde”.

History lovers, this one’s for you!

If you haven’t visited the Montezuma Heritage Museum in Cortez yet, add it to your Mesa Verde Country bucket list. From local stories and artifacts to rotating exhibits and community events, the museum does an incredible job preserving the rich history and culture of the region.

And this summer, there’s even more to explore across Mesa Verde Country, including fascinating events like Chasing Ghosts: A Bike Ride with Butch Cassidy & His Wild Bunch on Saturday, June 20 at 2 PM at the Mancos Opera House.

Historian Andrew Gulliford and adventurer Brett Davis will dive into the legends and realities of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, sharing stories from a modern mountain bike expedition along the historic outlaw trail. It’s a unique look at the Wild West, adventure, and the stories that still capture our imagination today.

Are you ready to celebrate American Craft Beer Week from May 11-17th?

There’s no better place to raise a glass than right here in Mesa Verde Country, where small-town charm meets seriously good craft beer. From laid-back patios to mountain views and locally inspired brews, our local breweries are the perfect way to toast the season:

- In Cortez, check out WildEdge Brewing Collective and Coffee for creative, small-batch beers with a fun, community vibe.

- In Dolores, visit Dolores River Brewery —a local favorite known for great beer, delicious pizza, and live music.

- In Mancos, don’t miss Mancos Brewing Company, where handcrafted brews and a welcoming atmosphere make it easy to stay awhile.

Whether you’re an IPA lover, a stout fan, or just here for the vibes, there’s something for everyone.
