An elephant bull steps into the morning light at , South Africa.

Unlike the larger breeding herds led by matriarchs, older male elephants can often be found alone or loosely associated with other bulls, living far more nomadic lives.

These bachelor groups can play an important role in elephant social structure, with older dominant bulls helping younger adolescent males learn behaviour, boundaries, and hierarchy.

A quieter and often overlooked side of elephant behaviour to observe on safari. When travelling, we would highly recommend asking your guide more about these social structures. They are fascinating to understand and observe in the wild.

Next stop, Phinda Forest Lodge.

Possibly one of the most unique safari lodges in South Africa, the lodge is nestled within the rare and endangered Sand Forest biome. Just 3,000 hectares of this ancient forest remain, with helping to protect around 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) of it within the reserve.

There is an immediate sense of calm here. The lodge’s distinctive Zulu-Zen design reflects both the region’s vibrant local culture and the slower rhythm of the forest itself.

Built carefully beneath the canopy to minimise environmental impact, Phinda Forest Lodge blends naturally into its surroundings while still offering a deeply comfortable and refined safari experience.

A very different change of pace within Phinda’s wilderness.

As the sun rose higher and the morning slowly warmed, our guide explained that this is often the perfect time to find cheetah moving through Phinda’s thornveld savanna landscape in the southern sections of the reserve.

As larger predators begin settling into the shade to rest, the more vulnerable cheetah can use this time to move more freely while avoiding potential conflict.

Only a few moments later, we caught our first glimpse of this male cheetah crossing the road towards a more open area.

One of the things we particularly appreciated at Phinda was how sightings were not simply “found,” but explained and understood through behaviour, habitat, timing, and patience.

Lions Playing at Phinda.

Earlier that morning, we had spent a long time sitting in silence watching a sub-adult lion crouched low in the thickets, patiently attempting to hunt with no success.

So we thoroughly enjoyed this lighter moment afterwards, as two lions played together and released some energy before eventually moving onto a rocky outcrop where we could no longer follow.

Watch beyond the playful interaction and you’ll notice a glimpse of the same patience, focus, and intensity she had shown earlier that morning.

Phinda is truly a special reserve. 🦏

During our stay at Phinda Mountain Lodge, sightings of rhino and even entire crashes gradually became “just part of the drive.”

But with the understanding of how hard conservation teams and their partners are working to protect this endangered species across Africa, seeing so many individuals moving freely through Phinda’s wilderness felt overwhelmingly special to witness.

For travellers hoping to see rhino in the wild, while also learning more about conservation efforts on the ground, Phinda Private Game Reserve remains one of South Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations to explore.

An andBeyond guide calling another vehicle into a lion sighting… while a lioness casually moves behind her vehicle at Phinda Private Game Reserve , South Africa.

One of the major differences between private reserves and many national parks is how wildlife sightings are managed.

In private reserves like Phinda, guides communicate with one another and carefully rotate vehicles through high-profile sightings. This helps reduce overcrowding, keeps the experience more exclusive, and most importantly, allows wildlife encounters to remain calm and respectful for the animals themselves.

It is one of those subtle safari details that can completely shape the quality of a game drive experience.

A Phinda leopard!

Phinda’s topography and vegetation types do add an extra challenge to finding these elusive animals. But thanks to years of research, careful habituation, and ethical guiding, the leopard viewing at Phinda Private Game Reserve has steadily become more and more consistent, especially in the southern sections of the reserve.

At Phinda, we appreciated not only the skills of the guide and tracker, but also how the story of the animals’ movements is pieced together. With andBeyond’s interpretative guiding style, you do not simply drive around looking for wildlife. A narrative is built around what you see, hear, and even smell, helping you better understand animal behaviour and how different species move through the landscape.

What we particularly enjoyed about this sighting was how we eventually found the male leopard hidden in the long grass. We had stopped for a nyala bull, a regular resident at Phinda, when our guide Darren immediately said, “Wait… this nyala is acting differently.”

Before the alarm call had even sounded, our guide had already spotted a male leopard moving silently through the grass.

A few hours of meticulously searching, tracking, and putting the pieces of the puzzle together had paid off. A leopard sighting at Phinda.

What a great story to be a part of. Such an amazing morning game drive. Not just because we saw a male leopard, but because of how we saw it.

A beautiful lioness keeping a watchful eye as another vehicle quietly joined our sighting at in Kenya’s Lewa Conservancy.

There was no disturbance and no noticeable change in her behaviour as the vehicle approached. Just an awareness of space, distance, and respect for the animal.

This is where guiding standards and ethics matter most on safari. You do not want to create a situation where wildlife changes behaviour, stops drinking, or feels pressured by vehicles around it.

And our guide did not.

Instead, the moment remained calm and natural, allowing us to observe her behaviour respectfully and without interruption.

This is the standard of guiding and lodges we look for and trust.

A warm brew of coffee between game drives at Sirikoi Lodge in Kenya’s Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Earlier this year, co-founders Kyle and Leah Green had their afternoon safari interrupted by light rain moving through the conservancy. Rather than continuing the drive, they chose to remain at camp and enjoy the quieter comforts of the lodge for a while.

It is one of the more understated parts of safari, but often one of the most memorable. Safari has a way of reconnecting you with nature’s rhythm, where the experience becomes less about constantly searching for wildlife and more about allowing yourself enough time to properly absorb a place.

Rain settling over camp. Coffee in hand. The conservancy becoming still for a while.

Moments like these are just as much a part of safari as the sightings themselves.

A quick highlight from this mornings game drive at , South Africa

This morning we watched a pride of lions move up a hill with four cubs. The sighting was lovely with the adults moving past the vehicle. The cubs, however, chose to walk through the thickets, which made it difficult to video for you.

However, it was a precious moment that we were able to watch through our binoculars. You could see the relaxed cubs climb the hill, and hear their moans as they moved higher ☺️ A very special and secretive sighting to observe.
