Parson’s Spring is located just outside Cottonwood, Arizona in Sycamore Canyon and it’s one of those places that catches people off guard in the best way. The hike drops you into a lush, shaded canyon that feels almost unreal against the surrounding desert.

Want to access this swimming hole? From Cottonwood, head toward Tuzigoot National Monument. Once you cross the Verde River bridge, turn onto Sycamore Canyon Road (FR 131), which is clearly signed for Sycamore Canyon. Stay on Sycamore Canyon Road for roughly 10 miles. The first stretch is paved, then it turns into well-graded dirt and eventually a rougher forest road as you get deeper into the canyon. A high clearance vehicle is recommended.

At the Parson’s Trailhead parking area, you’ll park and start the hike. From there, the trail drops down about 200 feet into Sycamore Canyon and follows the creek upstream for about 1.5 miles until you reach Parson’s Spring, the main swimming hole.

The river’s water carries suspended minerals, such as iron and calcium carbonate, which interact with sunlight to create a vibrant green appearance.

Keep in mind, you’ll need to download a digital map such as AllTrails to make sure you stay on the right trail. There’s no service in the canyon, so make sure you do this ahead of time.
