Did you know that grizzly bears once occupied an enormous range throughout western North America, from Alaska south into Mexico. Their territory also stretched from the Pacific coastline across the Great Plains and as far east as the Mississippi River. In the early 19th century, before large-scale European expansion, it is estimated that around 50,000 grizzlies lived within what is now the contiguous United States, inhabiting parts of 18 western states. Since then, habitat loss, hunting, and human development have drastically reduced their distribution, leaving the species absent from approximately 98% of its former range in the lower 48 states.

Fun Fact: Grizzly bears do not p*e or p**p during their 5 to 7 months of winter hibernation. Their bodies recycle waste into protein, allowing them to retain muscle mass without ever leaving the den.

High up in the rugged corners of the Beartooths, there’s a fox that’s basically a living fossil. This particular version of the Rocky Mountain red fox has been tucked away from the rest of the world for hundreds of thousands of years, surviving through two ice ages. It’s a pretty incredible comeback story for an animal that most people don’t even realize needs protecting.

What makes them so cool is that they don’t really look like the “classic” red fox. Instead of that bright orange fur, they have these muted, earthy tones that blend right into the rocks. They’ve also evolved specifically for the high country with smaller ears (to keep heat in) and massive, hairy paws that act like natural snowshoes. Even though they’ve been on the Beartooth Plateau for nearly half a million years, they aren’t exactly shy—you’ll often see them hunting along the highway or even hanging around Cooke City looking for a snack.

These two photos of a dusky grouse were taken within a couple minutes of each other, so why does he have yellow eyebrows in one photo, but orange in the other?

Answer:

The color change is not caused by shifting feathers, but rather by the blood flow within the bare skin of the “eyebrow” comb.

When a male grouse is in full courtship mode trying to impress a mate, he pumps blood into the tissue of his eye combs. This engorgement causes them to swell, stand erect, and shift in color from yellow to a vivid, rich orange or red.
