In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, sacred mountains are the dwelling places of deities 🙏

Reaching the physical summit is considered an intrusion into a space that belongs to something far beyond human ambition. What makes this fascinating is how the concept of a summit shifts within this framework. On some peaks, pilgrims may ascend much of the way, with the accepted stopping point understood locally as the summit, regardless of the highest physical point. The mountain defines its own boundary.

Mt. Kailash is the clearest example. No climbing permit has ever been issued. The 32-mile kora around its base is the act of devotion, and that reframes what it means to truly engage with a mountain.

The 2026 Golden Eagle Festival has wrapped in Bayan-Ulgii, and the response from our guests has been wonderful.

Hunters traveled in from townships across Mongolia’s westernmost province, about 1,600 km from Ulaanbaatar. T. Aitkhaval of Sagsai took first place, flying a two-year-old eagle, and the top seven placings ranged from age 16 to 72, with M. Yerbol of Deluun, 72, finishing third. The Founder’s Award, named for Jalsa Urubshurow and Nomadic Expeditions, went to the oldest hunters and those who traveled the farthest.

Jalsa and Nomadic Expeditions co-founded this festival in 1999 to safeguard eagle falconry, and seeing several generations compete side by side is the clearest sign it is working.

Bhutan teaches its 13 traditional arts and crafts in schools. Not as heritage electives, but as a core part of what it means to grow up Bhutanese. ✨

The Institute for Zorig Chusum in Thimphu is where students learn thangka painting, weaving, lacquerware, black smithery, and nine other disciplines that have defined Bhutanese visual culture for centuries. Walking through it on a Nomadic journey is one of those quiet moments that outlasts the dramatic ones.

The knowledge being passed on in that building is centuries old and completely alive.

Most of Nepal sits on the southern side of the Himalaya. Mustang sits on the northern side, and the difference is immediate and complete.

The landscape up here belongs to the Tibetan plateau. Ochre cliffs, ancient cave monasteries, and the walled city of Lo Manthang, capital of the Kingdom of Lo for centuries. Until 1992, this region was entirely closed to outsiders. The culture and way of life travelers encounter here have had very little time to change. That is rare, and worth protecting 🏔️

We are deeply honored by the role Nomadic Expeditions has played in preserving this tradition. In 1999, our founder Jalsa Urubshurow co-founded the Golden Eagle Festival alongside three Kazakh community members in western Mongolia, at a time when fewer than 20 falconers were actively practicing.

Nearly three decades later, more than 300 active falconers carry the tradition forward. UNESCO has recognized Kazakh eagle falconry as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The festival itself has grown into Mongolia's second most popular event, and every year we are proud to continue supporting its growth and the community behind it.

Each year the festival grows, and each year we are honored to be part of its continued recognition and conservation.

When Jalsa founded Nomadic Expeditions in 1992, every guide, driver, cook, and lodge manager was hired locally. That was not a policy decision. It was the only way the company made sense to him 🌍

One hundred percent local staff across all five destinations, thirty years later. Since the 1990s, we have offered free guide training to local communities across our destinations. Only a handful join our team at the end, and that is intentional. The others go on to work with operators across the industry, contributing to tourism economies that support entire regions. We have always believed that a rising tide lifts all boats.

We also work exclusively with locally owned operators, support communities through scholarships, conservation partnerships, and arts programs, and ensure that the places behind our journeys are genuinely better for our presence.
