Trunkfish on the fly! These weird-looking fish belong to the Ostraciidae family, which includes boxfish and cowfish. They are known for their triangular shape and hard, armor-plated body. They live and feed on the same flats as bonefish and permit. They will often eat a crab fly. These two fish are Buffalo Trunkfish (Lactophrys Trigonus). Many years ago, when visiting Anegada, in the British Virgin Islands, the restaurant there featured them on the menu. They called them “shellfish” and cooked them whole in their protective shell.

“Elops Saurus,” or Atlantic Ladyfish is a slender gamefish closely related to tarpon and bonefish. They’re fast like a bonefish and jump like a tarpon. And they’re a blast to catch on a fly rod.
