The Churchhouse Hammock Trail offers a quick, just-off-US19 respite from the noise and bustle of daily living. If you have 15 or 20 minutes, you can hike this scenic trail and take in the beauty of the woods. After you walk for just a couple minutes, you’ll move into a silence that is interrupted only by the songs of birds and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Of course, if you have a little more time, be sure to linger and take in all the sights, scents and sounds of this remarkable little trail!

The trail was named 'Churchhouse Hammock’ because it is the site of Crystal River’s first church, as well as being a hardwoods hammock, which is a small forest of live oaks that grows in slightly elevated areas. This elevation, is of course, one of the reasons the church was originally built there. Archaeologists have not located the exact site of the church, but it may have actually been on the site of the former Crystal River Mall, which is across US19 from Park property, or perhaps where that four-lane divided highway is today.

The gate to Churchhouse Hammock is open 8 til sunset daily, and admission is free. There’s a large picnic shelter, but no restrooms. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a hand-held leash no longer than 6 feet, and you must clean up after them. ~Heather
